The Development Director contributes to EUSA’s long-term success by creating new partnerships. The Development Director forges new relationships leading to partnerships and programs in EUSA’s five European locations by leveraging established contacts and knowledge of trends in study abroad and career education in a higher education context. Working with the University Relations team, the Development Director provides strategic leadership for development outreach to existing partners. The role is based in EUSA’s Boston office.

Reporting Relationship

The Development Director reports to the Boston Director.


  • Increase enrollments through new partnerships and programs.

  • Develop a robust pipeline of prospective partners.

  • Meet annual targets for new growth. Effectively track and measure the progress of development leads on a monthly basis, plan the requisite resources and timelines for bringing a prospect to delivery.

  • Use existing data or undertake original research to create and implement new development strategy, taking account of institutional and student body profiles, trends in the overall internship job market, pedagogy, and mobility and travel trends to design and explore new program models.

  • Strategic planning and implementation of EUSA’s annual conference attendance, including: attending and presenting; collaborating with University Relations and Operations to identify partners and/or EUSA employees to develop and deliver presentations which highlight EUSA’s placement and academic internship programming philosophy.

  • Represent EUSA within the study abroad and career education communities through a variety of media and events: contribute to online fora, listserves (e.g. SECUSS-L), and EUSA website to promote awareness of EUSA’s services and expertise; work with the Information Director to help identify opportunities for publication in a variety of online and print media, and contribute to writing or editing as required.


  • Extensive on-campus outreach to prospective partners.

  • Research and identify qualified prospective partners.

  • Lead EUSA in the development and implementation of growth strategy for new programs/cities.

  • Develop and produce proposal for new partners.

  • Provide smooth transition for new partners to University Relations management.

  • Track effectiveness of integrated strategic development activity.

  • Utilization of EUSA’s database for documentation of leads and related activity.

  • Network with universities and study abroad/career education community; identify opportunities for mutually beneficial collaboration with partners.

  • Provide semi-annual précis of study abroad, career education, and higher education trends/news.

  • Plan, manage, and track EUSA’s conference activity, presentations, and logistics, including presentations and social events.

  • Forecast and manage yearly Development budget.

  • Any other reasonable duties required by EUSA.


60 days of domestic and international travel per year.

Profile and Requirements

The successful candidate will be engaging and empathetic – a great talker and listener – able to grasp the needs of potential partners, and communicate and negotiate across all levels of an organization. The Development Director must be competent, confident, and comfortable reaching out to and networking within the academic and study abroad communities. The role demands a dynamic and adaptable self-starter with abundant initiative. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and results-driven with a proven track record of driving growth and meeting performance targets.


  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred

  • Demonstrated accomplishment in sustainable business and relationship development is essential, ideally in an educational context

  • Demonstrated ability to produce results in a fast-paced environment

  • Understanding of higher education and internships

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work across teams to achieve results

  • Experience simultaneously managing multiple initiatives

  • Proficient in MS Office; FileMaker Pro desirable
