Johnson County Community College is seeking an adjunct nursing faculty to teach in the Healthcare Simulation Center (HSC). The HSC adjunct nursing faculty is a clinically experienced, subject matter expert who is responsible for facilitating student learning and performance in the on-site simulation center. The HSC provides an immersive simulation learning experience for Associate Degree nursing students.

The adjunct nursing faculty will be responsible for working with faculty, students, staff, and external stakeholders to ensure that the highest quality simulation learning activities are efficiently integrated and implemented across the nursing curriculum. This position involves the use of interactive and simulated technology, with evidence-based simulation models, to implement and evaluate simulation scenarios as an educational modality.

Adjunct nursing faculty will provide clinical, educational, and technical expertise in simulation-based activities in the HSC. Faculty will work as part of the HSC team to provide current best practice for patient scenarios during a Simulation Clinical Day which complements the nursing curriculum. Faculty will be actively involved with scenario implementation and debriefing for learners. Student learning activities will include resolving simple-to-complex patient care situations via high-fidelity simulation.

This position includes the following:

• Collaborating with HSC team and other inter-professional faculty to develop simulation scenarios that promote student learning, professional development, critical thinking, and clinical decision making skills
• Facilitating patient scenarios and debriefing in all nursing courses (Pediatrics, Maternal Child, Mental Health, Medical Surgical, Gerontology, Management)
• Facilitating the adult learning process to create a safe non-threatening climate, which supports learning across the nursing curriculum
• Serving as a professional role model for students in communication, problem-solving, patient care delivery, and patient advocacy to facilitate student’s socialization into the profession
• Incorporating INACSL’s Standards of Best Practice in Simulation and NCSBN’s Simulation Guidelines for Prelicensure Nursing Education Programs
• Technical programming of simulators, patient care equipment (ex. Alaris infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring and defibrillators) and development of patient electronic healthcare record
• Set-up and tear down of patient scenarios, including moulage and lifting of mannequins

Required Skills
  • Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or university (Candidates with a BSN and requisite experience will be considered)
  • An active Kansas RN license
  • Current ACLS certification or instructor experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to multitask; process multiple sources of information quickly
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

  • Ability to understand and utilize advanced technical simulation equipment, and communicate that knowledge to others as appropriate
  • Ability to create and maintain a respectful and professional working environment, incorporating active learning, reflective thinking, and a confidential debriefing process
  • Visionary approach to simulation education in clinical and academic settings
Required Experience
  • A minimum of three years full-time or equivalent nursing experience within the last five years
  • Experience using electronic healthcare records
  • Current Critical Care experience

Preferred Experience

  • One to three years relevant teaching experience in simulation or education
  • Background/expertise in instructional and pedagogical concepts and methods in health care skills and simulation modality
  • Knowledge of Gaumard Patient Simulator software
