The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Duke seeks an Admissions Officer to join a team of lively, forward-looking admissions professionals. This is an entry level position. Candidates should be service oriented and aware of the needs of a highly selective, private research institution. The ideal candidate should possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, presentation skills and the ability to analyze data to inform decision making, and is prepared to be responsible for a full range of recruitment activities. General admissions responsibilities include decision making and interacting effectively with the computerized Admissions Office database. We seek energetic candidates with a strong sense of initiative, the ability to work well independently and in a team, and the capacity to manage multiple responsibilities concurrently.

Duties include:

  • Representing Duke University to students, parents, alumni and high school counselors in a variety of settings: evening information programs; high school visits; college fairs; and counselor meetings.
  • Evaluating applications and participating in the selection process.
  • Four to five weeks of travel throughout the year.
  • Conducting on-campus information sessions with both large and small groups; assisting with other on-campus recruitment and yield activities.
  • Performing other duties/projects as assigned by the Dean of Admissions, or other senior staff members.
  • Desired qualifications: Bachelor's degree, excellent writing and public speaking skills, high energy, ability to articulate the benefits of broad-based liberal arts and science education and the Pratt School of Engineering are required. Preference will be given to applicants with 1-3 years of highly selective admissions experience, or comparable work in student affairs. Position requires weekends and extended hours, especially during the fall and from January through April. Good judgment and the ability to work collegially in a deadline driven environment are important. Also important is the ability to learn a great deal about the admissions process and administration in a short amount of time. A valid driver's license is required.
