Under the supervision of the head swim coach, the incumbent will serve as an assistant swim coach.  The assistant coach will assist the head coach in the successful management of a Division III athletic program, in all aspects of the swimming program such as scouting and recruitment, monitoring academic progress of student-athletes, practice management, game preparation and strategy, player development, and public relations. 





Reporting to the Head Swim Coach, works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Adheres to the philosophy of the swimming program and the appropriate Division III rules of the NCAA.
  • Assists head coach to develop practice plans.
  • Assists head coach in all phases of the CMS swimming and diving season.
  • Works one-on-one with players during practice for skill development. 
  • Assists head coach to design and facilitate pre- and post-game workouts and conditioning.
  • Assists head coach with year-round recruiting of prospective high school and junior college players within a multi-state geographic territory, including phone calls and letters to high school coaches and prospective athletes in all positions.  Use appropriate discretion to determine which prospective student athletes are viable candidates for swimming program and should be presented to Offices of Admissions for CMC, HMC and Scripps Colleges.
  • Assists head coach with alumni and community outreach programs. 
  • Promote CMS swimming by assisting in compiling team statistics and results and delivering to Sports Information Director, Director of Athletic and Swim website.
  • Assists head coach with administrative aspects of the operation of the program.
  • Leading and assisting with the planning and coaching of workouts.
  • Recruiting qualified student athletes.
  • Managing logistics for practices and competitions.
  • Work within NCAA/SCIAC/CMS rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Head Coach.

Bachelor’s degree is required.



Collegiate swimming and/or youth/college coaching experience is required.  An evident understanding of the role of athletics in NCAA Division III college environment is necessary along with demonstrated experience in recruiting student-athletes.



A valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile insurance carrier is preferred.

A valid CPR/First Aid/Lifeguard certificates are required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:  Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

  • Assist head coach in leading a competitive varsity swimming and diving program that promotes the values of teamwork, discipline, commitment, resilience, with positive sportsmanship and high ethical standards.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division III and Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rules and regulations. 
  • Ability to effectively teach the fundamentals of swimming and diving to student athletes.
  • Must have strong interpersonal communication skills and have the ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations of the community including staff, student-athletes, faculty and alumni.
  • Must be able to travel as needed for competitions. 
  • Must be well organized.
  • Must be able to demonstrate appropriate level of confidentiality with regard to information and records.   
  • Ability to represent Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd and Scripps Colleges in a professional manner at all times.





This will be a full-time position (40 hours per week) from September-March.  This will be a part-time position the remainder of the year (April-August) with a varying schedule based on the needs of the department. This position will regularly require work in the evenings and on weekends. Swim practices and competitions are typically held during weekday mornings and afternoons and on Saturdays.    



This is a temporary, 12 month, non-exempt position.


Physical Requirements:  Moderate (up to 30 lbs.)  Ability to coach on the pool deck at practices and competitions.
