Associate Research Physicist - WEST Tokamak

US-NJ-Princeton

Job ID: 2019-10374
Type: Full-Time
# of Openings: 1
Category: Research and Laboratory

Princeton University

Overview

Post-doctoral position at WEST tokamak developing novel multi-energy soft x-ray diagnostics and performing core impurity transport studies.

Responsibilities

The Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) seeks to fill a post-doctoral research physicist position to work at the WEST tokamak situated at the CEA laboratory located in Cadarache, France. A vital component of the experimental work will include the development of a predictive model for 2D soft-x-ray (SXR) emission (including GUI visualization tool), and the design, construction, maintenance and operation of a new multi-energy SXR imaging diagnostic to measure the characteristic emission from medium- to high-Z impurities. The successful applicant is expected to measure the plasma emissivity in multiple energy ranges and explore measurement of the tungsten impurity density (nW) profiles using the line-emission, and Te and ne2Zeff profiles from the continuum emission. Applicants should have an experimental background and familiarity building and maintaining diagnostics, running atomic physics, tomographic reconstruction algorithms, integrated data analysis (IDA) as well as impurity transport codes. The PPPL-postdoc at WEST is also expected to participate in impurity transport experiments under a wide range of plasma densities, temperatures and confinement scenarios. Exploring both neoclassical fluxes and the Z-scaling of core turbulent transport induced by electron vs. ion heating is essential. This effort is designed to contribute to the near- and long-term highest priority research goals for the WEST tokamak which will integrate a non-inductive operation (Vloop~0) at reduced collisionality, with high-pressure, long energy-confinement-times, long-pulse operation (up to 1000 seconds) preventing core accumulation, and a transition to a cooled-divertor solution with tungsten metal walls.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in experimental plasma physics or a closely related discipline. The ability to interface effectively with a wide range of scientific and technical personnel is highly desirable.
