Assistant Director for Research and Assessment

Department Summary:
The University of Oregon Teaching Engagement Program (TEP), a unit within the Office of the Provost, creates occasions for faculty and graduate student instructors to develop and refresh their pedagogy in dialogue with one another; to engage with campus, national, and scholarly conversations about excellence in higher education; and to use teaching insights to inform UO policy and core curriculum renewal.

Position Summary:
The Assistant Director for Research and Assessment’s (ADRA) role is to strengthen campus-wide capacity for and culture of inquiry into student learning. The ADRA will be part of a team in the Office of the Provost that works with partners across campus to build an inclusive, engaged, and research-led campus-wide teaching culture. TEP creates occasions for all who teach on our campus to develop and refresh their pedagogy in dialogue with one another, to engage with campus, national, and scholarly conversations about excellence in higher education, and to use teaching insights to inform UO policy and core curriculum renewal.

ADRA will help strengthen, lead and in some cases initiate university efforts including:
• leading assessment of new core education program;
• bolstering assessment work of academic units through consultation and workshops;
• conducting research into its classroom and curricular interventions to support student learning and success;
• reporting to UO's accreditors; and
• supporting UO faculty on their own scholarship of teaching and learning projects, including through administering small grants around this work.

Minimum Requirements:
• Ph.D. or terminal degree in an academic discipline.

Professional Competencies:
• Facility with quantitative and/or qualitative research methods and tools (with preference given to candidates with both).
• Knowledge of higher education teaching.
• Thorough working knowledge of the literature on educational development, the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), and learning science research.
• Demonstrated abilities in research on student learning.
• Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in educational development, assessment of academic programs, or institutional research.
• Experience with statistical analysis and relevant software packages.
