Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Provides leadership in the administration ofacademic advising and counseling services, developing and implementing academicadvising guidelines, processes, and protocols, and ensuring services andpractices are student-centered
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of theAcademic Advising Office, supervising staff and implementing proactive andcohesive strategies to best serve the academic advising needs of students.
  •  Supervises a staff of College Advisors engagedin guiding students from new student orientation to graduation to includeproviding information on academic pathways and support services; helpingstudents clarify goals; creating academic plans; and exploring resources.
  • Implements programmatic aspects of the academicadvising program and works collaboratively with staff to develop new andinnovative ways to reach students and improve advising services.
  • Monitors the work of College Advisors, schedulesand assigns student caseloads, and ensures the provision of appropriate levelof academic and career advising, referral, and support services to students.
  • Works closely with District and key stakeholdersto facilitate the coordination of services with other departments and offices(i.e. Transfer Services) and support programs associated with first-year, earlyalert and other student success and retention initiatives.
  • Collaborates with the Dean and Associate Dean todevelop and implement initiatives and strategies focused on student success andretention.
  • Develops and implements advising interventionsand programming to address factors that influence and impact negatively onstudent persistence and degree completion.
  • Communicates with and updates College Advisorsand staff on curricular and academic policy changes and the implications foracademic advising to ensure the delivery of accurate and appropriate advisingservices to students.
  • Interviews and provides final recommendations forthe selection and hiring of professional staff. Establishes performance measures and conducts performanceevaluations.  Represents the college atemployee disciplinary hearings and administers disciplinary actions asrequired.  Recommends termination oremployment when appropriate.
  • Provides guidance and support to CollegeAdvisors engaged in intervening and working with students identified as at-riskor with academic difficulties.
  • Gathers data and prepares reports on performancemetrics relating to academic advising services. Leads initiatives to improve advising processes based on program evaluationdata and student feedback.
  • Plans and provides professional developmentopportunities for staff of College Advisors. Coordinates and provides in-house training workshops. Procures budgetapproval for external professional development seminars.
  • Ensures adherence by staff to professionalstandards (NACADA and Council for the Advancement of Standards) for academicadvising and to establish best practices.
  • Coordinates participation of Academic Advisingstaff in new student orientation programs, informational seminars and workshopsfor students and faculty.
  • Serves as weekend and/or evening administratorfor the college.



Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Education, Counseling, Student Development or Social Sciences required
  • Seven years (7) of Academic Advising experience, with three years (3) management experience required
  • Experience working in a unionized, higher education setting preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with technology in student services to assist in early alert, assessment, advising and retention management
