Associate Director, Memorial Union - Student Activities

Reporting to the director of the Memorial Union, the associate director, Memorial Union-Student Activities (associate director) is a student-centered educator that supports the co-curricular experience, leadership development, career enhancement skills, and personal development of all students. The associate director assists in building bridges with academic areas and building a sense of community on campus, as well as with the Ames community. The incumbent is charged with advising student-directed organizations that plan and implement major campus events to develop community and alcohol-free alternatives, as well as overseeing all major assessment initiatives for the Memorial Union, including programs, student employment, training, tenant services, events, and building usage.
This collaborative administrator develops and maintains strong partnerships with a variety of campus departments, community agencies, faculty, and alumni on student-related educational programming and develops and supervises implementation of policies and procedures related to student organizations. The associate director is responsible for supervision of five professional staff, one merit staff, three graduate assistants, and practicum students, student interns, and student staff, along with budget development and management, programs, activities, operations, procedures, and evaluation/assessment within the following areas:
• Student Activities (leadership and organizations);
• Programming Arts (Workspace – arts and crafts studio, Memorial Union art gallery space, and the Memorial Union permanent art collection);
• Maintenance Shop (concert venue);
• Recreation Center (billiards, bowling, and game area); and
• Student office space.
The successful candidate will possess the ability to create positive, transparent, and open relationships with staff, students, and faculty; a positive mindset with a focus on integrity; the ability to multitask; an openness to the ideas and opinions of others in the decision-making process; the ability to build, empower, and hold student teams accountable; a strong proficiency in collaboration and working positively with others; and excellent training, speaking, presentation, and facilitation skills.
A bachelor’s degree and eight years of related experience, or a master’s degree and six years of related experience, or a PhD or other professional degree and three years of experience are required.
Preferred qualifications include experience in the following areas:
• advising student groups and working with campus events;
• developing and implementing student leadership programs;
• university policy development and implementation;
• supervising personnel (hiring, training, and evaluating);
• administrative/budget management; and
• program planning, implementation, and assessment/evaluation.
Experience that demonstrates knowledge of risk management issues related to student organization management and knowledge of student activities and contract development are also preferred.
