The Department of Political Science consists of active scholars offering the Bachelor's of arts degree in political science within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Denver. Our undergraduate program of study includes courses in the fields of American politics, law, comparative and international politics, and political theory, as well as an introduction to the methods of inquiry in political science. Serving approximately 200 majors and students across campus, our faculty value inclusive excellence: a commitment by all constituents to create an academic experience that embraces and engages diverse perspectives and communities within an atmosphere of mutual respect. Our curriculum endeavors to develop students ability to think critically, communicate clearly, write effectively, and develop compelling argumentation based on justifiable sources of empirical evidence and analytical reasoning.

Position Summary

The Department of Political Science invites applications for a one-year non-tenure track, full-time Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor in the field of political theory for the 2019-20 academic year, to begin in September 2019. Position may be extended for an additional year if continued need and funding exist. The candidate hired will teach the equivalent of eight courses in the field of political theory, and ideally one other sub-field of political science, over three quarters. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach Introduction to Political Thought , a variety of upper-division courses in political theory (examples could include topics such as Contemporary Theory, American Political Thought, or Conservative or Feminist Political Theory), and at least one upper-division course in another sub-field of political science. Successful candidates will demonstrate a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching and a strong commitment to engaging students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles constructively.

Essential Functions

  • Teach the large (approx. 80-student) introductory course in political thought that serves the common curriculum and political science major program.
  • Teach smaller, writing intensive upper-division courses in the field of political theory.
  • Availability to meet outside of class in office hours on campus to provide guidance and assistance to students enrolled in courses taught.
  • The teaching schedule will be coordinated with the department chair.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced scholarly expertise in the field of political theory (ABD/PhD level)
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communication
  • Ability to interact constructively with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and undergraduate students.

Required Qualifications

  • ABD in political science or related theory or philosophy program.
  • Experience as an instructor or graduate teaching assistant for undergraduate courses in political science.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in political science or related theory or philosophy program.
  • Experience as an instructor teaching Introduction to Political Thought (theory) and upper-division undergraduate courses in political theory.
  • Scholarly expertise to develop an upper-division undergraduate course in an additional sub-field of political science.

Salary Range:
Salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
