This recruitment is to establish a pool of qualified candidates, from which multiple short term, temporary appointments may be made.

Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

PREP USA Reaching for the Stars Academy and PAMS Migrant Education Program are academically intense, mathematics-based, summer enrichment programs, designed to develop abstract reasoning and problem solving skills. Students are identified with the potential to become scientists or engineers, and reinforces them in pursuit of these fields. The programs are presented over the course of seven summers. The program design includes coursework, team projects, class presentations, field trips, special events and skill assessments. Teachers are required to attend staff orientation, training and program preparation.

We are seeking a creative, energetic, and engaging math and/or science teacher to join the University of the Pacific Jose Hernandez Reach for the Stars STEM Academy and PAMS Migrant Education Program for summer 2019. Students in this inaugural class are rising 7th grade students. Curriculum methodology is project based and focuses on introducing students to STEM via themed topics.

The purpose is to continue serving the Stockton Unified School District area going into the 9th year of the program. Teacher(s) hired will be instrumental in curriculum and project development with focus on building out the program and expanding to future years with possibilities for returning each successive summer. Teachers will also work closely with the program Administrator, a coordinator, and a classroom-teaching assistant to deliver the daily curriculum Monday through Friday, June 3 – 28, 2019. A closing ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 29th. Availability is required one week prior to the start of the academy.

Under the supervision of the Beyond Our Gates Tomorrow Project/BSE Community Liaison Administrator, the Project Based STEM Teacher will be responsible for teaching a STEM themed class of up to 25 students. Additionally, teacher(s) support the overall mission of the Academy, to: 1) increase students’ interest in and exposure to STEM, 2) engage and inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields, particularly females and underrepresented students, 3) prepare students for college and improve career mindedness 4) increase high school graduation and college going rates; especially STEM majors from underrepresented.

Essential Functions

1. Attend daily staff meetings and/or planning sessions.

2. Formulate lesson plans from a set of PREP curriculum in accordance with PREP objectives and philosophy.

3. Prepare quizzes, tests, final examinations and other instruments. Determine grades for students enrolled.

4. Be available for one-to-one tutoring before and after classes, as needed or requested.

5. Assist with PREP special activities related to the academic components of the program.

6. Work with Program Assistant Mentors daily to develop and coordinate lesson plans and educational and behavioral support activities for effective instruction.

7. Perform other related duties as assigned and/or requested.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Multiple Subject Credential, or Single Subject Mathematics or Science teaching credential, or STEM Degree, or related project-based experience.

• Three (3) years’ experience related to responsibilities stated above.

• Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse populations.

• Demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to speak and understand Spanish is preferred but not required.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
