SCAD Savannah seeks a Chair of Visual Effects to ensure students become fluent in expressing and developing their ideas and personal visions. In this role, you will direct the visual effects department, develop curriculum and teach classes annually as assigned.

The SCAD visual effects program provides a unique combination of professional instruction built upon a traditional fine arts foundation for those pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. Students have the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively within a framework of cooperative activity that reflects the real-world experience of film and digital entertainment production.

The ideal candidate has significant professional experience as a visual effects artist and, on-set or location, as a supervisor, facility manager or lead member of a visual effects production team in at least one of the principal areas of visual effects production, including technical direction, modeling, texture mapping, lighting, compositing, matte painting, shader writing, effects animation and creation of virtual 3D environments. They are also aware of current trends and technological developments in visual effects image acquisition as well as AR/VR applications of visual effects and other emerging technologies. Familiarity with the planning and execution of photographic elements for visual effects such as script breakdown and detailed shot planning, essential camera operation, scene data collection, CG integration, miniature and forced-perspective photography, blue and green screen photography, photogrammetry, use of motion control technology, set protocol and the planning and construction of special effects rigs for visual effects is preferred.

Applying their knowledge of the history and critical theory of visual effects, the Chair of Visual Effects demonstrates a passion for leading curriculum development and helping faculty propel the department’s continued success. They have strong communications skills and work well with students and faculty of diverse backgrounds as well.

Responsibilities include overseeing the department’s day-to-day administration and budget; working with the admission department to recruit talented candidates to SCAD; fostering inter-departmental collaboration to enhance the reputation of the SCAD visual effects department; observing and evaluating professors through class observations, their service and contributions to departmental goals; reviewing student evaluations; and consulting with the dean on the strategic plan for the School of Digital Media and professional development opportunities for its professors.

This is your chance to work with talented students within the historic district of Savannah, Georgia, a walkable, bikeable coastal city that provides a living laboratory for the study of art and design.

•Terminal degree or its equivalent in visual effects or a related field
•Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate students and faculty to think creatively and critically
•University-level administration and/or four years of teaching experience preferred
