Job Details

The University of Denver's School of Art & Art History (SAAH) has offered instruction in Art and Art History since 1880 and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. SAAH offers courses in Studio Art and Art History, and contributes to the Common Curriculum courses for the larger University. SAAH currently has twelve full time faculty members, approximately ten adjuncts, and serves an average of one hundred twenty undergraduate majors annually, in addition to approximate eighteen-twenty graduate MA students in Art History.

Position Summary

The School of Art & Art History at the University of Denver invites applications for a one-year Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor (VTAP) in Art History beginning in September 2019. Position may be extended for an additional year, contingent on continued need and funding. Our program, in addition to teaching students from throughout the university and studio art majors, has approximately 20 art history majors. There are also approximately 30 MA degree students in art history, with an added concentration in museum studies, as we are officially linked to the Denver Art Museum. Denver also offers the Clyfford Still Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, and many galleries that contribute to a dynamic art scene in metropolitan Denver-Boulder. Essential Functions

  • Candidate will teach 7 classes spread over three 10-week quarters (Fall, Winter and Spring).
  • Classes will include World Art I (Prehistory to 1000), World Art II (1000-1700), as well as 2 introductory classes for non-majors and 3 upper division classes (graduate/undergraduate) in your field (totaling 7).
  • The candidate will also assist graduate students with their final research projects.
  • Candidate should have an active research agenda, some publications, and potential for growth for national recognition.
  • Service within the School is expected, including student advising, and active participation within the needs of the Art History program.
  • Basic oversight of art history courses, to ensure students are following SAAH policies and curricular objectives particular to specific art history courses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Established and ongoing research activity, including publications within their area of expertise and presentations of their scholarship at professional and/or academically recognized venues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Required Qualifications

  • ABD in Art History at time of application
  • Teaching experience at the university level

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Art History

Salary Range
Salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
