General Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director of Gift Planning, the Senior Director Planned & Regional Giving is responsible for developing strategies for the solicitation of planned and major gifts from individuals through extensive field contact with prospective donors. The Sr. Director works with donors to determine the appropriate gift vehicles; including cash, securities, real property and other. The Sr. Director Planned & Regional Giving will be expected to take the lead on initiatives aimed at increasing planned gifts to schools and colleges and take the lead on monitoring incoming estates/trusts. The Sr. Director supervises the regional giving officers.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Makes assessment calls, cultivates, solicits, provides recognition and steward major and planned gifts for the university with an emphasis on prospects capable of gifts at the Major-Gifts level and above to meet established goals.
  • Actively qualifies donors for any capital campaign.
  • Manages in varying stages of involvement a portfolio of prospects and donors to ensure that timely steps are taken toward solicitation.
  • Develops and implements strategies for each prospect, including ways to increase involvement of donors and prospects in the activities of the university.
  • Utilizes both current and planned gift opportunities to best meet donors’ needs, interests, and financial capabilities.
  • Manages, leads and mentors Planned/Regional Giving positions.
  • Reviews research reports and information from the university donor management system database on assigned donors and prospects.
  • Plans trips and calls donors to set appointments for visits.
  • Builds relationships for the university with donors, effectively presents the case for philanthropic support of the university and explain gift opportunities.
  • Follows up with correspondence, phone calls and additional visits as appropriate to close gifts.
  • Collaborates with Executive Director on marketing and other initiatives to encourage planned giving to the university.
  • Monitors incoming estates and trusts with the assistance of the executive director and, when necessary,the Office of General Counsel.
  • Acts as an internal resource for other development officers in the cultivation and solicitation of planned gifts, and provides access to resources to develop well rounded principal gift strategies.
  • Provides regular progress reports on the prospect cultivation and solicitation, and completes and files thorough reports of all contacts in a timely manner.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Significant history of working with and advising high-net worth individuals and their families around investments, financial planning, and philanthropy.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience working with individuals and families surrounding philanthropic planning and wealth management.


Preferred Requirements

  • Advanced degree or other legal or financial planning and wealth management credentials strongly preferred.
  • Development experience OR comparable sales/marketing/financial planning/wealth management experience involving individual relationship building


Managerial Responsibilities

  • The Senior Director will be tasked with managing two to three associate directors of regional giving.


Certifications & Licenses

  • Although not required, preference for individuals with financial planning and wealth management certification


Other Skills & Abilities Reqd

  • Ability to promote and successfully solicit high-level major gifts by identifying major gift prospects, managing caseload, designing and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies and ensuring follow-up activities and stewardship.
  • Demonstrated communications and interpersonal skills and success in working in a team setting.
  • Experience in a leadership capacity in a Catholic educational setting.

Additional Information

  • Must be able to travel frequently and work varied hours.
