    Science and Pre-Health Career Specialist

    This is one of several newly created full-time positions in The Aspire Center at Carthage College. The College recently received a $15 million gift to support the expansion of career development initiatives. The new career development program positions the center as a hub of activity that extends well beyond what you might expect at a traditional career center. The Aspire Program will provide all students with career advisors and mentors, as well as opportunities for students to build leadership, entrepreneurship, and creativity skills.

    Carthage's location in the Milwaukee to Chicago corridor provides students access to a wide range of experiential learning and post-graduate opportunities, and its unique J-term and off-campus study program provides global access to expand students' perspectives on the world.

    The Aspire Center is seeking Career Specialists with field expertise to advise students, collaborate with faculty/staff, and develop/maintain relationships with employers, alumni, and graduate/professional schools. The Science and Pre-Health Career Specialist will work particularly closely with faculty advisors in health/pre-health and advisors in the Student Success Center.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Organize and execute topically relevant programming with campus and community colleagues, including site visits, mock interviews, mentoring programs, and relevant skill-building workshops. Work closely with relevant student organizations.
    • Cultivate new relationships with employers, alumni, and graduate/professional schools to provide students with access to meaningful mentoring, shadowing, internships, research, and other skill-building experiences starting in students' first year on campus.
    • Advise students and alumni who express interest in majors and careers in the sciences and health professions; help them to succeed in traditional paths and to explore alternative options in health care and science. Facilitate communication between students and mentors on topics such as: exploring academic/career options, understanding intersection of culture and career, developing a professional presence, writing professional documents, and obtaining jobs/internships/admittance to graduate and professional school.
    • Develop relevant web content, social media, and other communication materials to motivate students and other key stakeholders to engage in The Aspire Program.
    • Track progress and outcomes of students and alumni to support a culture of continuous improvement and to show points of distinction for the College.
    • Contribute to community education efforts to help parents, alumni and community members to understand and apply current best practices in career development
    • Meet with prospective students to help them understand The Aspire Program, science, and pre-health options at Carthage.
    • Participate in on-going professional development activities.
    • Complete other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

      Graduate/professional degree required; all areas of study are invited to apply.Work or educational experiences in the sciences, research, and/or health care are highly valued; experience working in a lab or other research setting is particularly desirable.Must have experience in advising, teaching, or counseling; prior pre-health advising experience strongly preferred.Demonstrated ability to design, execute, and evaluate career/personal development initiatives.Commitment to working with traditionally under-represented populations is expected.Attentive to details; must possess strong writing and editing skills; ability to use technology required for the role, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and databases.Experience collaborating effectively with others.Available to work some evenings and weekends; valid driver's license and willingness to travel (primarily in Kenosha, Milwaukee, and Chicagoland area).

    Location

    Carthage’s campus is an 80-acre arboretum located on the shore of Lake Michigan in Kenosha, Wis., between Chicago and Milwaukee. The campus offers breathtaking views of Lake Michigan from almost every building on campus, including many residence hall rooms. The Pike River winds its way through the campus.

    Degrees Offered

    Carthage awards the Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in more than 40 subject areas, and the Master of Education degree. Carthage also hosts the Loyola University Chicago Master of Social Work graduate degree program.

    Awards, Honors & Accreditation

    Carthage is a Best Midwestern College by The Princeton Review (2013), and has been named a Tier 1 national liberal arts institution by U.S. News & World Report (2013). Carthage has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1916.

    Academics

    Carthage offers majors, minors and concentrations in more than 50 areas of study. Students can choose from accounting to astrophysics, occupational therapy to opera. Carthage seniors score in the top 11 percent nationally in critical thinking, problem solving and written communication according to the Collegiate Learning Assessment.

    The Carthage faculty comprises nearly 150 scholars, 90 percent of whom hold doctorate or terminal degrees from the world’s top graduate schools including Harvard, Yale, MIT, Princeton, and Oxford. Professors, not teaching assistants, teach all classes, and the average class size is just 17 students.

    Campus Life

    70% of students live on campus. On-campus housing is guaranteed for all four years. Carthage is a Lutheran school, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, but welcomes students of all faiths.

    Study Abroad

    Carthage is ranked No. 6 in the nation among baccalaureate institutions for student participation in short-term student abroad. Many students who wouldn’t otherwise study abroad during college have an opportunity to spend up to a month in a different country during Carthage’s January Term.

    Facilities

    Things look new at Carthage because they are new. Carthage has invested more than $150 million in campus facilities in the past decade. New buildings include the Campbell Student Union, the Oaks Residential Village, N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center, and A. W. Clausen Center for World Business. The College breaks ground on a new science center in Spring 2014.

    Athletics

    Carthage fields 24 NCAA Division III teams competing in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. About a third of Carthage students are involved in varsity intercollegiate athletics, and another third participate in the many intramural and club sports offered.
