Function:

Under the direction of the Head Men’s Basketball Coach, the assistant coach will provide support and assistance with all aspects of the men’s basketball program. This position will be expected to oversee and coach a position group, recruit a given territory, assist in practice and game preparation and oversee the academic development of student athletes. The incumbent is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Furman University, the Conference, and the NCAA. Furman University is a member of the NCAA at the Division I level.

Job Description:

Responsibilities

General

·    Connect and develop relationships with our entire roster in order to build trust and influence.

·    Coach and develop the post players on a daily basis.

·    Assigned coaching duties given by the head coach during practice and games.

·    Recruit (discover, evaluate and educate) prospects for our program daily in assigned territory. 

Coaching Duties

  • Scout every third opponent on the schedule and help prepare/execute the game plan.  
  • Develop players on a daily basis through film study, individual skill instruction, and on court coaching during practice. 
  • Help oversee all special situations during games and provide feedback on ways for implementation and improvement

Administrative

·    Monitor the academic progress of assigned players on our team with weekly meetings. 

·    Assist the Head Coach in scheduling games for upcoming seasons.

·    Help recruit teams to team camp in the summer and give assistance in the overall organization.

·    Connect with the community and potential supporters of the program and Furman Athletics.

Other

·    Any other duties assigned by head coach

Relationships:

Dailycontactwithmembersofownworkunit,immediatesupervisor,studentathletes,student managers, other institutions and general public.

Frequentcontactwithotherdepartments,thegeneralpublic,andsponsors.

Reports To: Head Men’s Basketball Coach

Workisperformedindependentlyonroutinework,non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.

Education/SkillRequirements:

Bachelors Degree.

ExtensiveknowledgeofallconferenceandNCAApolicies,rules,andregulationsand adhereto these policies as they pertain to the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Abilitytoworkeffectivelywithcollegestudentathletes,athleticstaff,UniversitypersonnelandAlumni. 

Excellent communication and organizational skills.
