Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The mission of the Department of Mass Communication is to prepare students for careers and study in mass communication by offering engaged learning, student media and research experiences, and connections to professional practice opportunities. Our vision is to have graduates with an understanding of the ethical, practical and theoretical foundations in the field, a command of emerging technologies, and an understanding of and appreciation for cultural diversity.

Primary Purpose of Position

The faculty member serving in the position of lecturer in Broadcast and Emerging Media will teach one or two skills/production courses in the department’s Broadcast Media concentration as well as assist the manager of the NCCU TV Studio. The person who occupies the position will direct students in the production of broadcast television, radio and emerging media programs and provides creative and technical decision-making that enhances the aesthetic quality of the programs. The faculty member in the position will also be responsible for producing, maintaining, and analyzing social media.

The faculty member will combine his or her professional background with a willingness to help mentor students involved with video production with a focus on producing news media reporting from a variety of beats as well as storytelling/narrative communication. The faculty member will also help advise students in the department’s Broadcast Media concentration help them to use the NCCU TV Studio to develop high-quality portfolio content that may be disseminated by media outlets with which we develop partnerships and gain access, as well as promote and guide external student competition, evaluation, and assessment in these areas. The faculty member is also expected affiliate with appropriate professional organizations such as BEA, SPJ, CMA, JEA, NABJ, and/or other organizations related to their professional fields and that might be useful for helping the department enhance its curriculum and student experiences.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•Knowledge of video, audio and emerging media technologies and operation of equipment.
•Knowledge of the tools and techniques needed to produce multimedia content, including recording, editing, and distributing video and audio along with generating photos and data visualizations.
•Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of instructional outcomes.
•An understanding of appropriate learning strategies as well as problem-solving and organizational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
•Ability to develop, implement and manage a social media strategy.
•Ability to teach best practices in digital and video reporting, verification, and public engagement.
•Must have the ability to select and convey information clearly and concisely to groups or individuals either verbally or in writing to ensure understanding.
•Excellent communication skills to listen and respond appropriately to others.
•Ability to teach students to independently schedule tasks, resources and materials to complete work assignments, as well as the ability to work independently and utilize judgment in making changes and adjustments.
•Ability to work with limited supervision.
•Ability to connect students to potential internship and job opportunities in the field.

Minimum Education/Experience

Applicants should possess at least master’s degree in journalism, mass communication or a related field and have a record of professional achievement with a background in broadcast journalism and significant expertise in the area of multimedia writing, reporting, storytelling, production, and social media or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
