This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The Cyber Security Engineer will lead the effort for developing and implementing the campus information security program, as well as, developing and supporting California State University and the State of California information security policies. Working almost independently but under the direction of the Information Security Officer, the incumbent will use their advanced expert-level knowledge in network and security protocols to assess and advise the campus on innovative processes to minimize risk exposure:

  • Implement upgraded administered network data and cyber security monitoring tools
  • Lead investigator for complex security incidents
  • Provide perspective and develop solutions on significant project management
  • Provide lead technical management for responsible implementation and maintenance of information security initiatives
  • Key role in providing input to information security decision making and policy development
  • Lead high risk, high-impact projects with campus-wide significance
  • Expert advocate for information security across the institution, working closely with other senior leaders, both within the Information Technology Security Office and across the campus
  • Provides technical and organizational leadership, and consider the organization’s and the institution’s strategic goals in the execution of all tasks

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $10,416.67 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,249 - $11,748 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in operating systems programs, maintenance, and systems administration features is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science, mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent technical training and/or experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Operating Systems Analyst include a working knowledge of the assigned computer operating systems, systems analysis, and systems-level programming.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • The incumbent will be expected to seek continued professional development regarding advancements in technologies and best practices in higher education environments.
  • Evidence of advanced and comprehensive knowledge of information security at the Expert level. Possess an advanced and comprehensive knowledge of the technical specialty and a working knowledge of related specialties and are able to apply this extensive expertise as a generalist or specialist.Experience in complex, high-risk project leadership in enterprise Information Security.Advanced and comprehensive knowledge and experience with institutional information security.Knowledge and experience with security tools, such as forensics, vulnerability management, log management and asset management tools, and other ancillary systems having campus-wide and/or network impact.Experience in planning and directing complex projects.Experience in feasibility studies and gap analysis to make decisions on high-impact initiatives.Higher education environment experience.Project management and lead experience.Extensive knowledge of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model.Advanced knowledge of stateful firewall, VPN, intrusion detection/prevention, forensics, event correlation, inline anti-virus / anti-malware / trojan applications and deep patch inspection.Knowledge of general security concepts and techniques (e.g. ISO 27002) and an awareness of trends and developments in the area of security.Demonstrated ability to provide campus-wide leadership in the secure use of data and supporting systems. Information security certification(s) such as CISSP
