To provide entry level skills in the performance of a variety of trades required for the maintenance, repair, and operation of University facilities and equipment. Responsible for the assisting in the installation, operation, and the routine repair of University facilities and grounds.

Description of Duties

•Performs routine generalist’s duties in the building, grounds, custodial and maintenance departments of the physical plant.
•May also include assisting skilled trades in larger projects
•Assignments may include duties associated with, but not limited to, basic electrical/electronic, plumbing, HVAC, painting, carpentry, masonry, utility, air conditioning, grounds keeping, custodial, and manual and general labor assignments and duties.
•May perform custodial level cleaning as needed.
•May be regularly switched from job assignments on an as needed basis that require basic skill levels and physical requirements consistent with the trade, skill, and or duty being performed.
•May require irregular working hours / split shift and “on call” basis.
•Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education

Completion of 6th Grade. Ability to read English well enough to comprehend Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on cleansers, chemicals, and other containers, and to understand work orders, complete time cards, and receive oral and written work directions.

Preferred Education

Completion of related vocational training in a related trade.

Licenses/Certifications

Valid Texas state driver’s license or ability to obtain within six weeks of hire and approved drivers rating as established by the UT System.

Preferred Experience

Experience in building construction, mechanical utilities, or maintenance trades, including grounds and custodial maintenance.

Equipment

Basic knowledge of the tools and equipment common to electrical, plumbing, carpentry, grounds, custodial and other general trades.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Requires constant exposure to outside environment. Some work in restricted spaces, exposure to dust, extreme heat, and hot, dry, wet, cold conditions. Some duties and working conditions may create bodily strain and discomfort. May be required to carry a two-way radio and/or pager and must be available on an “on call” basis. Must have a flexible work schedule for evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime. Must be physically able to perform all essential functions and duties of the job. Requires stooping, bending, kneeling, walking, lifting, and carrying of heavy objects to perform job duties. Requires moving, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of heavy furniture, equipment, trash cans, boxes, files, filing cabinets, and other objects weighing up to 50 lbs. when working alone and 100 lbs. with help. Must be able to climb step ladders and maintain balance to clean and wash windows and lighting. Danger of falls, electrical shock and burns, chemical hazards, and other hazards and conditions inherent to the trade and or duty assigned. This position will be subject to a pre-employment physical.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
