Job Summary

The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Clayton State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor position in English to teach first-year writing and English majors’ courses in writing, both face-to-face and online. The candidate will also be expected to develop and teach graduate courses in writing. The position is an academic year, tenure-track appointment that reports to the Chair of the Department of English and will begin on January 1, 2020. Salary will be commensurate with experience and competitive with comparable programs.

The Department of English offers undergraduate degrees and minors in English, with concentrations in writing (creative and professional), literature, and secondary education. The department also teaches first-year writing and literature survey courses in the general education curriculum. It offers English courses in two graduate degree programs: the multidisciplinary Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and the Master of Arts in Teaching in English.   • Teach undergraduate first-year writing courses, English majors’ courses, and graduate courses (master’s degree), both online and seated; load is 4-4 with optional summer teaching.
  • Engage in scholarly activities leading to grants, presentations, and publications.
  • Participate in committee service to department, college, university, and community.
Required Qualifications
  • An earned Ph.D. in English, with an emphasis in Rhetoric, Composition, and/or Writing Studies. ABD candidates with a firm dissertation defense date may be considered.
  • A record of successful college-level teaching at the undergraduate level;
  • Evidence of scholarly presentation and publication potential in field;
  • Knowledge of the application of technology to enhance teaching and learning;
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of successful experience teaching writing at the college level;
  • Evidence of successful experience teaching first-year writing courses;
  • Evidence of successful experience teaching online at the college level;
  • Ability to teach professional and technical writing, digital writing, publishing design and layout, and/or professional editing
  • Other specializations and interests in: African American rhetoric, cultural rhetoric, intercultural communication, or eportfolio assessment
