Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

This is a professional position responsible for academic advising of high demand majors within Grady College, advising support of pre-majors, and administrative support of all Grady undergraduate services from admissions through graduation. It is a permanent, full-time position in the College and reports to the Director of Undergraduate Services.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Knowledge of Grady College degree programs, academic opportunities, and UGA curriculum requirements as they relate to academic planning for pre-majors and completion of the ABJ degree. Experience with UGA’s Degree Works audit system is preferred.

Outstanding written and oral communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, data management, and task and time management skills. It also entails a sophisticated sense of the public relations dimensions of advising and student services and a respect for the importance of effective advising to student success.

The successful candidate will work collegially in a team environment with the undergraduate staff, departments, and faculty in support of the undergraduate learning mission at Grady.

Specific duties/capacities include:
Primary academic advising of Grady majors.
Ability to communicate requirements confidently and credibly to high-achieving students.
Ability to build intellectual and professional relationships with students.
Ability to develop effective informational messages and to use online advising tools.
Ability to work with confidential student data and maintain records essential to advising, graduation, and enrollment reporting
Knowledge of UGA academic opportunities and Grady professional opportunities.
Support of outreach to pre-majors and other students interested in journalism and mass communication
Graduation checks and clearance for Grady students.
Support of admissions cycle each Spring and Fall.
Support of academic and other events as assigned by the Director, including Convocation and UGA orientations.
Ability to manage priority course reservations system.
Serve as point of contact for prospective and incoming transfer students.
Other duties as assigned by Director.

Advise Entertainment and Media Studies and Digital and Broadcast Journalism majors. Meet with students to recommend courses and develop four-semester plans; prepare advising forms; answer student questions in person, by phone, and via email; and direct students to campus resources. Certify completion of degree requirements and clear all Entertainment and Media Studies and Digital Broadcast Journalism majors for graduation.
