Founded in 1974, the Davis IC provides immigration regulatory advising and processing, cultural adjustment, social enrichment, and assistance with practical matters related to living in the U.S. It also acts as a center for cultural and educational programming that advances cross-cultural understanding, supports interaction between U.S. and international students and scholars, and promotes cultural competency across the University. The successful candidate will be a committed and experienced leader with expertise in international education; a demonstrated history of successful management in higher education; and a commitment to the holistic development and support of diverse student and scholar populations.

Reporting to the Vice Provost for International Affairs and Operations, the Director of the Davis International Center (Davis IC) provides leadership and management for a dynamic 14-person department that delivers comprehensive and specialized services that support the growth, development, and welfare of international students, scholars, and visitors at Princeton University. The Davis IC also supports DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students. As of fall 2018, Princeton has 653 international undergraduate students (12% of undergraduates), 1,256 international graduate students (44% of graduate students), and 1,175 international scholars (postdocs, researchers, and faculty members).
Principal Duties Leadership (50%)
- Create and refine strategic plan and operational protocols for the Davis IC in collaboration with the Vice Provost.Oversee advising for international students and scholars on compliance with immigration laws and regulations.Collaborate with academic departments and administrative units to provide exceptional service, including communicating and representing the concerns of these individuals to the campus and larger Princeton community.Partner with campus offices (General Counsel, Government Affairs, Graduate School, Dean of Undergraduate Students, Dean of the College/Office of International Programs, English Language Program, University Health Services, Dean of Faculty, Career Services, Off-Campus Housing) to develop policices, processes, services, and programs that address unique situations affecting international students.Respond to policies, incidents, and crises that impact international students and scholars and DACA students.Create and manage the $2M budget for the Davis IC, including ensuring appropriate use of gift and endowment funds.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive listing of practical advising resources, including making referrals for assistance with University housing, English language training, academic expectations, University rules and regulations, emergency financial support, cross-cultural adjustment issues, medical services, psychological counseling, religious counseling, career/job opportunities, and family/dependent concerns.Oversee orientations and other programs for students, scholars, postdoctoral researchers and fellows, Visiting Student Research Collaborators, and international visitors.Oversee and develop collaborative programs with other campus units with regard to intercultural competency and diversity and inclusion.Maintain active membership in appropriate professional organizations (e.g. NAFSA) and participate in professional development.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of web resources and other technical services including Sunapsis, SEVIS batch reporting solution and content management system.Oversee and support affiliate groups including the International Center Leaders (student organization), the International Spouses and Partners of Princeton University, Friends of the Davis IC volunteer organization, and local host families.Serve on University committees and boards of affiliated organizations, as appropriate.
- 7-10 years of increasing levels of responsibility working with international students and scholars.Management experience, preferably in a higher educational institution.Proven record of administrative and financial competence and organizational skills.Ability to interact effectively with individuals and institutions from diverse cultures and different parts of the world. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; diplomatic and negotiation skills are essential. Technological competence, a commitment to data-driven continuous improvement, and a willingness to embrace new technology.Customer-centered, responsive, and flexible approach in a dynamic institutional and regularly environment.Superb judgment, analytic, and problem-solving skills.Ability to attend evening and weekend activities as necessary. Proficiency in a foreign language and experience living, working, or studying abroad.US citizen or legal permanent residence required (for DSO back-up and ARO qualification purposes).
