Overview
The heating systems group at PPPL designs, maintains, and operates the systems that heat plasmas in the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX), using high-power radio frequency systems or intense multi-MW particle beams. This position provides electro-mechanical engineering, controls, and technical and field support for Heating Group, NSTX-U Operations and projects, and other engineering projects. This position supports the Heating Engineering Section, Heating Group, Engineering Department.
Responsibilities
- Provides Electrical Engineering, Controls, and Instrumentation of electro-mechanical systems like Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) detection systems with designs that meet requirements. Solves engineering problems by applying codes and standards to implement installations and tests using prescribed engineering procedures.
- Provides field engineering and technical support for NSTX-U subsystems including Heating, Torus ultra-high vacuum, safety systems, ODH, high-vacuum Bakeout, and Cooling Water Systems.
- Controls Design - Supports NSTX-U Operations regarding controls engineering and implementation on PLC and electronics interfaces.
- ES&H - performs Job Hazard Analysis, pre-job briefs, small group safety meetings, management safety walkthroughs, safety training, and other needs.
- Provides engineering and technical support for other Engineering Department projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- BSEE, BSME, or Applied Physics with 3-5 years experience in electrical or mechanical engineering and controls with some field experience preferred
- Masters Degree in EE or MS in Applied Physics with 1-2 years experience in electrical or mechanical engineering and controls with some field experience preferred
- Computer & control panel operations with full mental concentration.Full hand, arm and leg mechanical dexterity and coordination.Full or fully corrected vision, correct depth and color perception, occasional close work, work in low light conditions.Moderate exertion and steps.Routinely engaged in walking, standing or sitting.Exposure to dust, temperature excursions, humidity, low level radiation, noise, household and industrial chemicals, solvents and some fumes.Working near hand tools, powered hand tools, machine shop tools and rotating equipment.Working near moving vehicles, equipment, cranes, hoists, tractor, lifts and forklifts.Adequate hearing and speaking for good communication, alarm annunciation, announcements, operations, troubleshooting, telephonic and electronic communiqués and situational awareness in a construction or industrial environment.
