Job Description:

The University of Massachusetts Amherst College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) seeks an innovative, dynamic, and student-centered half-time Lecturer to co-develop and teach its Sophomore Experience course, SBS College to Careers. This course uses SBS Pathways, the College’s leading-edge, proactive student success, advising, and curriculum model, to engage sophomores in planning their Pathways and establishing their professional profiles. Candidates should have in-person and online teaching experience, as well as a strong appreciation for linkages between academic, experiential, and professional development in building student success. Experience with team-based learning is desirable.

The part-time, 50% Lecturer position will co-teach an in-person, team-based-learning course in fall 2019, while spending significant time developing content for blended (in-person and online) courses to be launched in spring 2020. In addition to presenting course content, the Lecturer will meet with all students outside of class and be responsible for feedback and assessment of SBS Pathways assignments and career related materials (e.g., resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, elevator pitches, self-narratives). In spring 2020, the Lecturer will teach 3 one-credit course sections, meet one-on-one with students, and continue development of course content and format to enable the College to offer this course to all 1200 of its sophomores each year in the future. This position reports to the SBS Senior Associate Dean for Education and Student Development.

This is a half time, 1-year Lecturer position with the possibility of renewal and/or an increase in time, based on funding and programmatic needs.

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences serves 5,000 undergraduate majors in Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Journalism, Landscape Architecture, Legal Studies, Political Science, Resource Economics, Sociology, Social Thought and Political Economy, Sustainable Community Development, and the SBS Exploratory Track.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in higher education or a social science discipline or related field is required. Ed.D./Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Candidates for the position must have college-level, in-person teaching experience, and a solid understanding of career and professional development tools and processes. Experience with online teaching is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with team-based learning is preferred.
  • Experience guiding students in translating college experience into competencies and a personal narrative is also highly desirable.
