Stanford Medicine is seeking a software developer to join the Research IT team in the Office of Information Resources and Technology (IRT) (https://researchit.stanford.edu). Research IT is building the next generation of tools and services used by researchers, research participants, patients and clinicians to collect, discover, segment and analyze data, make discoveries, and improve human health and wellness. This core infrastructure, Stanford's biomedical data science platform, is a major strategic initiative announced by the Dean for delivering precision health (https://med.stanford.edu/precisionhealth.html) by using modern data analysis and cloud technologies to leverage petabyte-scale data to improve individual patients' health.


In this role, you will design and implement solutions in support of managed interdisciplinary research. This is comprised of a data commons including clinical, genetics, imaging, and other data, with associated infrastructure and tools. You will participate in all aspects of the software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and writing design specifications, to implementing, testing, and maintaining/operating the software over time. Good judgment about design tradeoffs, and the ability to clearly document and communicate opinions and plans will be important.


We are looking for a someone with the following qualifications:
  • Experience working with various genomics data such as sequence data from Illumina or PacBio
  • Understand how to analyze whole genome, exome, RNA-Seq data, etc., build data processing pipelines, and assess data quality
  • Expertise in server-side Java programming and security practices
  • Familiar with SQL to work with data in systems such as BigQuery, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or SQL Server
  • Familiar with modern, secure web application development
  • Skilled at working with researchers, and executive stakeholders to gather requirements, communicate tradeoffs, and propose compromise solutions as needed
  • Serve as a technical resource for researchers using our infrastructure and data
  • Programming skills and testing practices to ensure high quality solutions
  • Write clean code that can be easily maintained
  • Strong team player and individual contributor
  • Write clear design specifications and documentation
  • Ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly as needed (e.g. integrating data from new devices/systems, new data management and visualization tools)
  • Communicate clearly and represent the team well in writing and verbally to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Able to use modern development tools (e.g. GitHub, Jira, Docker, IntelliJ) within an Agile development process, and adopt better tools and techniques as they become available

    Our team works with a variety of other systems and technologies such as Epic Clarity, OMOP CDM, PACS/RIS systems, DICOM, etc. Experience with any such systems will be helpful but is not required.

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

    Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
    • Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.
    • Proficiency with application design and data modeling.
    • Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.
    • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.
    • Ability to lead activities on structured team development projects.
    • Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
    • Knowledge of application domain.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
    • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
    • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
    • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand.
    • Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

    This position will work at our new Stanford Redwood City campus in June 2019.

    WORKING CONDITIONS: May work extended hours, evening and weekends.
