Basic Function

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Development, the Executive Director provides vision, leadership, and management of integrated health and counseling services for students at Denison University. This position will work in collaboration with the associate directors of Health Services and Counseling Services in overseeing their operations, including program planning and evaluation, personnel, budgeting, and all other functions of the health care delivery system. This responsibility extends to executing collaborative strategic initiatives related to integrated healthcare and campus-wide wellness education, prevention programming, and outreach for a high achieving and diverse student population. Oversight additionally includes Religious & Spiritual Life, which contributes to student and community wellbeing. The Executive Director will partner with Institutional Advancement and Facilities on final stages of fundraising, design and construction of a new Student Wellness Center.

The Executive Director is responsible for shaping policy, leading program improvement and staff development initiatives, and coordinating crisis response. In addition, the Executive Director will serve as an active Student Development and campus colleague in assessing and meeting student needs and leading the Center as a thoughtful contributor to the educational mission of the college.

Essential Job Functions

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Provide leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of all aspects of the health and counseling services’ operations. Engage in staff education and development regarding shared values and cooperative practices within a multi-disciplinary healthcare setting. Lead strategic planning and policy development, implementation and evaluation.

Provide administrative direction to the medical director and appropriate support regarding the delivery of medical services. Provide administrative supervision and conduct performance appraisals of the associate directors of Health Services and Counseling Services, the Student Health and Wellness Education Coordinator, and the University Chaplain and Director of Religious and Spiritual Life. Supervise the development of the annual budgets for each reporting unit to ensure adequate breadth and depth in health and mental health, support services, and educational outreach. Assist with personnel recruitment. Serve as advocate for wellness staff and initiatives with university administration. Direct and manage the engagement of Center staff in clinical, outreach, and campus service responsibilities.

Provide leadership in the continued development of a campus wellness program, encompassing clinical care for a diverse student population, prevention, education and outreach. This includes cultivating partnerships with departments and offices including the Residential Communities, Student Leadership & Involvement, the Center for Learning and Teaching, and the Knowlton Center for Career Exploration. Support and contribute to retention initiatives developed by the Dean of Students.

Coordinate representation and participate in student and family orientation workshops and the on-boarding of new students. Contribute to training programs for residential community assistants, faculty and staff.

Identify emerging trends relating to student health and wellness, and understand how student wellness impacts the individual college experience, as well as the community as a whole. Recommend quality and service improvement initiatives, including those related to the physical plant. Contribute to strategic planning and resource development efforts related to wellness initiatives, and contribute to the planned construction of the new Student Wellness Center.

Serve on VP’s divisional leadership team, shaping strategic plans and execution. Serve the college through collaborative engagement on campus committees.

Oversee and manage budgets associated with contract services provided by physicians, psychiatrist, nutritionist and other health care providers.

Ensure accurate and confidential record keeping by the Health and Counseling Services, including data on assessment and usage of services and other information necessary to prepare annual reports and to evaluate the Center’s policies and procedures. Ensure timely updates to university handbooks, the departmental website, and other documents. Promote professional development opportunities, and support a strong ethos of professional engagement.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Development.

Minimum Qualifications

•Advanced degree in public health, social work, psychology, medicine, and/or business administration.
•Mental health and medical professionals must be currently licensed and must be eligible for licensing in Ohio.
•A minimum of eight years of relevant experience that demonstrates preparedness for the administrative responsibilities of the position, including familiarity with the delivery of both medical and mental health services.
•Demonstrated leadership, supervisory and managerial skills, including oversight of financial resources and budgetary planning; experience and skill working on multiple projects with competing deadlines; and ability to establish goals and workload priorities.
•Demonstrated commitment to serving, and experience with effective outreach to, a diverse student population.
•Experience with program development, outcomes assessment, and the use of data to enhance services and make decisions.
•Strong consultation skills with particular ability to assess situations and recommend appropriate responses; ability to perform under stress when confronted with unusual or emergency situations.
•Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

•Terminal degree in a relevant field.
•Progressive experience, including at least three years of administrative experience, in a higher education student health/mental health setting.
•Experience in an upper-level administrative leadership position and/or training through an MBA or health care administration certificate program.
•Experience in a residential liberal arts college environment.
