The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will be part of a collaborative team using molecular, cellular, and –omics approaches to study plant-virus-vector interactions. The primary objective of the position is to develop infectious clones of -sense and/or +sense viruses infecting plants. The incumbent will work with insect-transmitted viruses. Initial work will focus on characterizing the basic biology of the virus and optimizing carrying capacity and vector transmission. The postdoc will also mentor and manage undergraduate researchers. The postdoc will meet frequently with Dr. Whitfield to discuss best practices in grant writing, manuscript preparation, and mentoring.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The postdoc will develop weekly research reports for the PI and monthly reports to the funding agency. The postdoc will also assist with maintenance of virus and insect colonies. The position will train and mentor other lab members. The position may be required to driver to other campus locations for research (greenhouse, phytotron, microscope).

Minimum Experience/Education

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.

Departmental Required Skills
  • PhD in Virology, Plant Pathology, Entomology, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience with experimental design and statistical analysis, molecular biology, handling plant and/or insect viruses.
  • Molecular biology skills required: primer design, RNA handling, protein expression, Western blotting, and qRT-PCR.
  • Excellent scientific and writing skills.
  • Mentoring experience or a desire to mentor undergraduate researchers.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • PhD in Virology, Plant Pathology, Entomology, or a related discipline with an emphasis in Plant Virology/Vector Interactions.
  • Experience with cloning RNA plant viruses, construction of full-length infectious clones and mutagenesis of regulatory regions.
  • Previous experience with transmission biology of insect-borne viruses.
Required License or Certification
  • Valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
