Our Opportunity

South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) seeks a highly motivated and qualified individual for the part-time position of Security Guard 1 to provide for general safety and security of the college campus, property, and maintenance of order between the hours of midnight and 8 a.m.

This position provides assistance to visitors, students, faculty, and staff on the enforcement of college policy and applicable laws and in the documentation of non-criminal incidents reported to the Security Department.

What You'll Do

This position will patrol campus property on foot or in a security vehicle, inspect buildings and grounds for prowlers, suspicious activity, fire, property damage, safety hazards, security of doors, or other irregularities, lock and unlock campus buildings and rooms for faculty and staff, as well as provide traffic direction and control, investigate accidents or incidents.

The Security Guard 1 administers first aid, issue citations for traffic violations, gathers evidence, locate witnesses, and appears in court as required. Excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary.

This position will also:

  • Enforce parking regulations and issue warnings/citations.
  • Operate department communication equipment including telephone inquiries, reports of incidents of concern, and dispatching foot and mobile units. This position will operate emergency alerting systems, control building access through software and key issuance, monitor alarm systems, and provide escort and other public assistance services as requested.
  • Prepare, type, and distribute reports; Issue and enter data on traffic and parking citations.
  • Provide assistance to motorists on campus including jump starts, and lock outs.
  • Assist in providing safety instruction and public information and education on safety and security topics to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Coordinate activities of and with city police or county sheriff and state patrol in cases of emergency.
  • Assist maintenance and grounds in detecting and reporting maintenance and safety issues.
Qualifications You Possess

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduation or GED and one year of experience in areas of work such as: security guard, correctional officer or store investigations, or, police officer, police reserve officer, military police, or other law enforcement work.
    OR
a certificate of completion in a basic law enforcement training program approved by the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission; or, a certificate of completion in a police or reserve police academy or military training program.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • No previous felony convictions.
  • Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet software such as MS Office.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working in a college environment.

This position will work no more than 69 hours per month during the graveyard shift of midnight - 8 a.m.

Conditions of Part-Time Employment
Non-permanent employees under the provisions of WAC 357-19-435 are only authorized to work up to a maximum of 1,050 hours in any twelve (12) consecutive- month period from the original date of hire. Employment with the college could end any time.
