Job Summary/Basic Function:
The University of North Texas Libraries Special Libraries Division is looking for an enthusiastic, collaborative, and innovative librarian to serve as the Head of the Music Library. The Head of the Music Library provides creative leadership, supervision, and oversight for Music Library activities and oversees all operations and public services including collection development, music technical services, faculty liaison activities, access services, instruction, outreach, and reference services for all music materials and the Sound Preservation Studio. The Head Music Librarian is responsible for administering the collections including print, multimedia, electronic, and special collections and for supervising a staff of librarians and support personnel. This position is also responsible for professional development through scholarly research and publication, presentations, participation in national professional associations, and service.
One of the largest academic music libraries in the U.S., the UNT Music Library contains over 400,000 volumes of scores, books, periodicals, dissertations, and reference works in many languages and provides access to major electronic databases for research and streaming services. In addition, more than one million recordings in all formats, from Edison cylinders and 78s to compact disc and digital tape recordings comprise the Ozier Sound Recording Archive; the Music Library's sound preservation studio, staffed by a full-time sound preservationist, provides preservation and digitization services for archive items. Special collections are a particular strength of the Music Library's holdings, with over 130 collections emphasizing the many genres classified under Western art music and jazz, but also popular music and various sub-genres. Ten full-time staff and roughly 30 student assistants provide reference and access services, ensuring that the College of Music and all outside researchers are able to locate and access music materials.

It offers fully accredited degrees from the bachelor to doctoral levels and is home to the world's first jazz studies degree program. Responsibilities:
* Administer all Music Library collections, including scores, books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, electronic resources, & special collections
* Oversee supervision of 9 full-time staff & approximately 30 part-time student and graduate assistants
* Serve as liaison to UNT College of Music faculty
* Oversee all collection development activities; serve as selector for print resources, including periodicals, scores, books on music, & electronic resources
* Serve as main contact point for gifts
* Assume main responsibility for all development & community outreach efforts
* Serve on library & university committees as requested, & participate in scholarly/professional/creative & service activities

Minimum Qualifications:
* MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent.
* Master's Degree in Music or equivalent.
* Minimum of three years' progressively responsible experience as a music librarian in a research library.
* Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, supervisory, and analytical skills.
* Demonstrated understanding of the information needs of music faculty and students.
*Demonstrated experience with outreach and instruction activities.
* Working knowledge of music and audio information technologies and their ability to enhance library services.
* Familiarity with relevant print and electronic sources and well-developed computer and searching skills.
* Demonstrated understanding of music collection development issues, including the changing landscape of scholarly communication.
* Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to adapt in an evolving organizational environment.
* Strong commitment to excellence in service and a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
* Experience managing and supervising a library department or unit.
* Demonstrated personal professional development through scholarly research and publication, presentations, and participation in national professional associations and activities appropriate to the level of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:
* A doctoral degree in music and reading knowledge of a Western European Language.
* Demonstrated experience with current and emerging trends in music collection development and collection assessment.
* Experience with rare materials, including manuscripts and archives.
* Experience developing and managing budgets.
* Experience in fundraising and development.
