Duties

The Eukaryotic Pathogen Database resource (EuPathDB.org) is a large, multi-institutional project responsible for developing and providing scientific data-mining websites used by researchers worldwide to study selected microbial pathogens, including those responsible for malaria and enteric disease. Leveraging experience with the integration and analysis of pathogen genomics and functional data, we are seeking to fill new positions, as we expand to support the exploration of clinical and epidemiological datasets (see ClinEpiDB.org), incorporating global projects (such as MAL-ED) that focus on the interplay between child health and the infectious disease in developing countries.

As a Scientific Data Specialist, you will join a growing team responsible for processing global epidemiologic data sets to make them easily accessible and openly available to epidemiologists, laboratory researchers, field biologists, clinicians and policy-makers. The successful applicant will work collaboratively as part of a 30+ member team including epidemiologists, biologists, annotators, data-loaders, ontologists, user-interface specialists, software developers and outreach staff to present our global user base with intuitive and informative web interfaces for accessing and interrogating large-scale datasets. This position will focus on processing data received from study investigators according to ClinEpiDB SOPs, including tracking data files received from the data providers, managing day-to-day communications to ensure accurate understanding and interpreting of the data sets, working with our ontology team to map variables to display hierarchies and ontology terms, and working with data providers to QC the resulting web sites. Effective communication skills are required, including the ability to coordinate groups from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds. An understanding of the challenges posed by large-scale epidemiological data is highly desirable. This position may require some international travel, support at workshops and webinars, participation in scientific writing and keeping up-to-date with the pertinent scientific literature. Ample opportunity for advancement.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics or related field, with a minimum of one year of work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably involving infectious disease epidemiology, maternal and child health and/or biostatistics. Effective data management skills including file processing, an understanding of clean data principles and basic univariate measures is a must; experience with data analysis applications (R, SAS, STATA) and relational databases is a plus.
