DEFINITION


Under general supervision, perform skilled work in the alteration, service, repair, and maintenance of automotive and other power-operated equipment; and to perform other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Skilled Maintenance Auto Mechanic class is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series in that primary responsibilities are the service, repair, and maintenance of automotive and other power-operated equipment. Incumbents may be required to perform skilled work in one or more other trades.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, fuel, ignition, and related defects on automobiles, pickup trucks, forklifts, and other mechanical equipment;
  • Tune engines;
  • Inspect for safety; service and repair automotive equipment in accordance with California Highway Patrol requirements;
  • Perform daily trip service/safety checks on vehicles;
  • Measure fuel tanks, read meters, and log readings daily;
  • Repair and replace brake systems;
  • Repair and replace carburetors and fuel pumps; repair automotive electrical systems;
  • Maintain a clean, safe shop, including wash rack and gas island areas;
  • Clean and maintain the interior and exterior of vehicles and equipment;
  • Perform welding incidental to mechanical repairs;
  • Inspect and certify monthly fire extinguisher inspections;
  • Work from and understand operator manuals, automotive manuals, and related drawings and schematics;
  • Perform work using correct safety precautions;
  • Select, order, and maintain an inventory of parts, supplies and materials;
  • Replace valves, pistons, rings, and bearings;
  • Operate light to moderately heavy construction equipment;
  • Demonstrate a working skill in automotive repair trade;
  • Operate diagnostic testing equipment to troubleshoot/repair vehicles and equipment;
  • Estimate the scope and cost of work assignments and select necessary tools and materials to complete the job;
  • Work from sketches, drawings, blueprints, and schematics;
  • Plan and draw simple drawings of assigned projects;
  • Respond to emergency situations in a safe and timely manner;
  • Compile written reports and give oral reports on work;
  • Oversee the work of helpers;
  • Drive vehicles requiring class "B" license;
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships;
  • See for the purpose of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter;
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Speak so that others will be able to understand normal in-person and telephone conversation;
  • Lift 100 pounds and/or carry 50 pounds;
  • Stand for extended periods of time;
  • Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel, crawl;
  • Reach in all directions;
  • Ascend and descend ladder;
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Essential functions of particular positions within classifications may vary because job duties may vary by work location.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade. Completion of apprenticeship or vocational training in automotive repair and overhaul. Associate degree preferred.
Experience:
  • Two years of journeyman-level experience in automotive maintenance and repair may be substituted for completion of apprenticeship.
Knowledge of:
  • Tools, materials, methods, and terminology used in automotive trade;
  • Methods and practices used in the maintenance of vehicles, tools, machinery, and equipment;
  • Safe working practices;
  • Material Safety Data Sheets;
  • Hazardous Communications regulations - "Right to Know";
  • Fire Prevention, codes, and extinguishers;
  • Correct responses to emergency situations;
  • CPR and First Aid.
Licenses and Certificates:
  • Possess a valid California Driver's License.
