Description:

Reporting to the Executive Director for Development, the Major Gifts Officer is responsible for managing a portfolio of 120-150 major gift prospects. The MGO works collaboratively within Institutional Advancement and across Pratt faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees to secure gifts that advance the strategic goals of Pratt Institute. The MGO monitors prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations and recommends and assists with building and maintaining relationships across campus.

Position Duties:

  • Complete a minimum of 120 qualified contacts per year.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle, working both with prospect management and independently in initiating contacts with potential donors, and developing appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies to move prospects in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
  • Work closely with Institutional Advancement staff to ensure coordination among programs and initiatives across campus.
  • Record and document all personal prospect contacts and outcomes in the Raiser’s Edge database.
  • Manage portfolio and proposal activity in each prospect’s record, updating regularly.
  • Actively participate in the prospect review meetings and in the identification of major gifts prospects.
  • Assist with the preparation of briefing materials and strategies for the President, Vice President, and Executive Director as needed.
  • Participate in on-going professional development activities as relevant to maintain and enhance skills and abilities in fundraising.
  • Manage sensitive information and adheres to confidentiality policies regarding privacy of database information.
  • Conduct work in a manner that is ethical and sensitive to the needs of donors, development staff members, and Pratt Institute.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Five to seven years’ successful experience in major gift fundraising, preferably in higher education. Knowledge of Planned Gift and estate planning a plus.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal, and decision making skills.
  • Experience in developing strategies for prospects with excellent follow-through.
  • Ability to see and understand the fundraising goals and objectives of Pratt, and to integrate major gifts within those goals and objectives.
  • Ability to think strategically to successfully negotiate with individuals and groups, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities, complex gift scenarios, and tight deadlines, coordinating with the Director of Planned Giving where appropriate for blended gifts.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team and manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously.
  • The intelligence, maturity, and sound judgement necessary for interfacing with major donor prospects.
  • Knowledge of moves management strategies and techniques.
  • Deadline-driven with high attention to detail.
  • Experience with databases, preferably Raiser's Edge.
  • Proficiency in Google platforms and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Must have the ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Must have the ability to travel as needed.
  • Appreciation for the important role that higher education and an art and design education plays in the world.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse staff, as well as demonstrate intercultural competence.
  • An understanding of the important role of diversity, equity, and inclusion to institutional advancement.

Pratt Institute is a coeducational, private, professional college offering associate, bachelor and master's degree programs in art and design, architecture and library science. The Institute has been educating professionals for productive careers in artistic and technical fields since its founding on its present site in Brooklyn in 1887 by the industrialist and philanthropist Charles Pratt. Pratt is one of the largest undergraduate and graduate schools for art, design and architecture in the country and offers a wide range of cross discipline study options, dual degrees and major concentrations. The Institute's 25-acre campus contains twenty-four buildings, including landmark Romanesque and Renaissance Revival-style structures, clustered around spacious lawns and tree-canopied plazas. Sixteen buildings contain extensive studio, shop and technical facilities needed to support work in all media-from the traditional to the experimental. Five buildings are student residences. All have computer networking capacities and are Internet accessible. Computer labs, established with the most current equipment and the latest software, are available for instructional purposes and individual project use. Gallery space is extensive and the work of students, alumni, staff and other well-known artists is shown throughout the academic year. Pratt's Library, an historical landmark built in 1896, was the first fully automated academic library in the New York City area. Its art and architecture collection is excellent and contains approximately 208,000 volumes, 500 periodical and newspaper subscriptions, 66,000 slides, 190,000 pictures, 50,000 microforms, and 45,000 governmental documents.
