The Kralj lab is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to develop new molecular and hardware tools for optogenetics. The project will involve working with diverse cellular systems including bacteria, yeast, and neurons. We are interested in controlling the flow of ions across specific cellular membranes to enable precise perturbations in space and time with which to identify downstream physiology. The Kralj lab leverages high-throughput, single cell imaging to develop new optical sensors and actuators, and then combines those tools with advanced analytics to discover new biological insight at large scale. We are also interested in new potential directions and are excited to integrate new skills into our existing pipelines.

Who We Are

The Kralj lab is located in the BioFrontiers Institute and Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology departments at CU-Boulder. The lab is housed in a state of the art building which houses BioFrontiers, Biochemistry, and Chemical and Biological Engineering, which fosters an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The postdoc will be expected to lead a project to develop new optogenetic actuators and associated optical hardware. This will include creating new protein constructs, high throughput functional imaging protocols, and data analysis pipelines. The candidate will take the lead writing scientific articles and presenting data at conferences. The postdoc will also be expected to help other members in the lab as appropriate. The postdoc will report directly to Dr. Kralj.

The Kralj lab is a fast paced scientific environment and candidates will be willing to adapt the project as data is collected. Travel will be expected to scientific conferences.

  • PhD in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering or related field.
  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy is required.
  • Candidates should have a proven track record, including first author publications in well regarded journals.
  • The successful applicant must be broadly interested in biological questions with a willingness to adapt the project in response to new insights.
What You Will Need
  • Expertise in molecular biology and cell culture.
  • Strong grasp of cellular biology is essential to the project.
  • Enthusiasm and excitement for new projects
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Experience with building/modifying optical hardware, cloning, fluorescent protein design, optogenetics, mammalian cell culture, LabView, and automated image processing are desired for this position.
  • Candidates with experience in optogenetics, microscope construction, or directed evolution are preferred.
