Instructor of Communications and Media Arts

TITLE OF POSITION/RANK: Instructor of Communications and Media Arts (Tenure Track)

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Communications & Media Arts and Journalism Department/School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Communications & Media Arts and Journalism Department at Westchester Community College has one (1) tenure-track opening for fall 2019. The department seeks motivated candidates with strong media communication education experience as well as substantial digital/analog studio production experience and interest. This position is responsible for managing the campus studio facility and all associated equipment. This position will also oversee the revamping of the campus studio, and will be responsible for monitoring and supervising the studio. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Teach 15 hours a week.
  • Hold a minimum of 5 office hours per week.
  • Assist in the development of curricula, selection of adjunct faculty, and advisement of students.
  • Serve on department and college-wide committees.
  • Participate in professional development.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of a Master’s degree in a related field and one year of teaching experience required. Experience in audio/video editing and production, using software such as Final Cut Pro, Avid/Adobe, Pro Tools, podcast platforms or other related software is necessary. Teaching experience required include courses in Radio Production, Radio and TV Announcing, Broadcast Production, and Television Production. All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Extensive and relevant experience in the industry preferred. Community college teaching experience is also preferred. Experience in teaching courses in Speech Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Voice & Diction, and Group Discussion & Decision-Making, and Understanding Mass Media are a plus. Assess student learning through demonstrated reflective practice, including assessment of student learning. This includes ongoing formative assessments, as well as official departmental assessment. Manage classes and learning environments through fostering a positive classroom-learning environment by presenting information in a way that is inclusive to all learners. Support learning through student engagement – incorporating pedagogical strategies such as active learning, authentic and problem-based activities, and other successful teaching strategies into classroom instruction.


SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $64,841 plus excellent benefits.
