The Department of Animal Science conducts internationally recognized research in nutrition, genetics, reproduction, health, and well-being of domesticated animals. The Department is the largest academic program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and provides instruction to over 850 undergraduate and 90 graduate students. The Department also is a leader in extension and engagement programs to farmers, allied industry and the public.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State University is pleased to announce recruitment for a faculty position in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the rank of Assistant Professor with formal appointments in research (50%) and academic programs (50%). This faculty position will develop a research program investigating the integrated roles of the intestinal microbiota, epithelium, and immune cells as influenced by nutrition relevant to food animals.

Opportunities to collaborate with nutritionists in CALS, gut physiologist in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and immunologists and microbiologists in the College of Sciences make NC State University an attractive research environment for this position. Further opportunities to collaborate with professors in the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence program in Microbiomes and Complex Microbial Communities and other scientists within the Research Triangle Park are exceptional.

The appointee is expected to guide and mentor graduate students, teach an undergraduate animal nutrition course and develop an upper level course in the area of expertise. This position will also be actively involved in undergraduate advising and curricular development. The successful candidate will take advantage of wide array of resources available through swine, beef, dairy, and small ruminant research facilities located on campus and at eight outlying research stations.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The appointee is expected to be involved in service activities supporting the department, college, university, and professional societies. The individual will be part of a team of animal scientists that is expected to enhance the Department and College’s overall research, teaching, and extension programs. Collaboration with other scientists across the department, university, and at other institutions as well as interactions with animal industry professionals is expected.

Minimum Education/Experience

Must have a a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree and a strong interest in improving animal production at the nexus of gut health, the microbiome and nutrition.

Departmental Required Skills

Aptitude and desire to teach, train and interact with students, faculty, and agribusiness colleagues is important.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Prefer candidates to have a record of excellence in scholarly research and demonstrable potential to establish an extramurally funded research program.

Preference will be given to candidates with documented success in research activities as demonstrated by publications and a record of extramural funding, documented teaching and advising experiences, and experience in and willingness to develop collaborative research projects.

Required License or Certification

While driving a vehicle is not an essential function of this position, we believe it is necessary to have a valid NC driver’s license to perform the essential functions of the job. This position will need to travel off-site on occasion, alone and must independently be able to travel from location to location without reliance on others or the advanced notice that is often required of alternative means of transportation. Due to limitations in funding, the College cannot afford the high costs that would be required in attaining the services of transportation services such as taxis or car services.
