SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Athletics Digital Media Coordinator/Community Engagement Officer will serve on the athletic administration team and play a key role in the daily operations of a multiple sport NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic program. Responsible for developing and implementing a digital media plan for the purpose of promoting and publicizing UMass Dartmouth Athletics, celebrating the student-athlete experience, encouraging increased fan attendance and enhancing community engagement. Work collaboratively with members of the athletics department, other University departments, and community partners. The Athletics Digital Media Coordinator/Community Engagement Officer will assist with telling the story of Corsair Athletics through traditional and digital media.

Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in publicizing UMass Dartmouth’s intercollegiate programs through traditional media relations, publications, web site maintenance, statistical record keeping, and NCAA and conference reporting.
  • Play a predominant role in the game-day experience by regularly attending games to provide in-game statistics and coordinate video web streaming, photography coverage, and social media engagement.
  • Perform an audit of all Corsair social media platforms (department, team-based) to evaluate and identify proper brand identity. Administer and manage assessment tools to monitor and track social media engagement and results, ensure consistent branding and delivery messages on all accounts, while identifying new social media strategies and emerging technology.
  • Capture video at athletic events, including editing game highlights and cinematic recaps; responsible for creating effective hype videos and featured content on social media.
  • Supervise and mentor a student intern from the University to coordinate new graphic design content to enhance the promotion of UMass Dartmouth Athletics through publications, video web streaming platforms, and social media streams.
  • Manage, schedule, and facilitate staff training and development of approximately 20 student workers, and ensure NCAA and University protocols and rules are followed and enforced.
  • Develop and coordinate digital strategies to implement the recent Center for Marketing Research Fan Attendance study, focusing on raising campus awareness, promotions, fan attendance, and community engagement.
  • Collaborate with University Advancement to promote campus initiatives through social media platforms such as coach’s appeals, #GivingTuesday, and #CorsairChallenge. Assist the Associate Director of Athletics in fulfilling our digital obligations with sponsorship opportunities with community partners.
  • Work in partnership with University Marketing to coordinate staged photography shoots to celebrate student-athlete success and University Advancement campaigns.
  • Coordinate and direct game promotions, special events (i.e. conference championships, Corsair Hall of Fame, Corsair Athletics Recognition Dinner), and national initiatives (Division III Week, National Girls and Women in Sport Day, Diversity and Inclusion Week, National-Student Athlete Day).
  • Organize the monthly Athlete of the Week program to celebrate the success of our student-athletes (i.e. selection, visibility, design and enhancement of program, and facilitation).
  • Collaborate with Student Activities, Involvement, and Leadership (SAIL) to promote campus initiatives (i.e. Weeks of Welcome, Arnie’s Cupboard, Homecoming and Family Weekend).
  • Serve as a key member of the department staff.
  • Attend departmental staff meetings and trainings.
  • Assist with major events sponsored by the department.
  • Represent the institution by attending conference meetings.
  • Fulfill all requirements of the NCAA Ethnic Minorities and Women’s internship program.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Previous experience (one year) with technologies in the field such as StatCrew, Adobe Creative Suite, and website content management systems such as Presto or SideArm, wirecast, broadcasting platforms, etc. Student employment experience included.

OTHER:

  • Ability to communicate effectively across all forms of media.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Some travel required.
  • The incumbent must identify as an ethnic minority and/or woman. For the purposes of the grant, racial ethnic minorities are described pursuant to the Federal guidelines of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
  • Must be available to travel to Indianapolis July 25-26, 2019 for NCAA orientation.

The internship is for two years beginning August 1, 2019, and ending May 31, 2021. An additional $3,000 will be provided by the NCAA for professional development opportunities each year of the grant. This position is made available through the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minorities and Women’s Internship Grant 2019-2021.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a collegiate athletic department.
