Job Description:

Mills College - TRIO Upward Bound
Upward Bound (UB) is a federally funded college preparatory program that offers assistance to low-income and first-generation college-bound students. The focus of Upward Bound is to develop skills needed for a college education. UB is dedicated to helping participating students graduate from high school with a solid foundation (i.e., completion of required coursework and a strong GPA) necessary for entering college. Upward Bound continues to support participants to ensure continued college enrollment and, ultimately, graduation.

The Mills College Upward Bound program has played an integral role in the Oakland Unified School District for the last 45 years and now begins a relationship with the West Contra Costa Unified School District to continue to build and expand close relationships with eligible students and their families. Our ultimate goal is to equip students with the skills and motivation necessary for college graduation.

Overview
Every summer Mills College Upward Bound offers a six-week intensive instructional program for our high school students. This year the program will include a two-week residential program at Holy Names University, 3500 Mountain Boulevard, Oakland, CA 94619.

Residential Program:
Summer RA employment begins on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 and continues through Friday, August 2, 2019. The first two weeks RAs are required to live in the residence hall. The schedule is projected to be check-in at 2:30pm on Sunday afternoons, check-out at 4:30pm on Friday evenings. Typically Monday-Friday weekdays are free between 9:00 am-3:15 pm daily, except for one day a week on-call. During the last week of employment RAs will accompany students on an overnight college tour. The final schedule is subject to change.

Essential Job Functions:
The primary responsibilities for Resident Advisors include:

  • Providing supervision of all residential students.
  • Assisting in the set-up and clean-up of the UB residence hall common areas or other rooms used by the program.
  • Assisting in gathering supplies for program activities.
  • Supervising free time activity of students.
  • Providing academic assistance during study hall.
  • Supervising UB students during field trips and program events.
  • Assisting in planning, coordinating, and implementing social, cultural, and recreational activities.
  • Following and enforcing the rules and regulations of the College and the Upward Bound Program at all times.
  • Being responsible for on-call duties one day per week.
  • Providing supervision during meal times.
  • Participating in nightly staff meetings with the residential team.
  • Supervising use of all program equipment and immediately reporting any missing or damaged property to the Associate Director or Director.
  • Assisting in enhancing the living environment and promoting an educational atmosphere in the residence hall.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Associate Director or Director.

    Requirements:

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment
  • Be able to work safely in compliance with the College Injury and Illness Prevention Plan
  • Experience in a college residential setting
  • Experience with low-income, first generations college-bound students
  • Ability to be punctual, professional, positive, motivated, interactive, and flexible
  • Ability to multitask, handle stress, model behavior that is expected of students and take initiative to address unexpected program or participant needs
  • Ability to create and maintain appropriate boundaries with students and other program staff
  • Upon selection, RA must submit fingerprints for the Department of Justice Background Check
  • Must be available for the following program dates:

  • Summer RA Training July 10th-12th
  • Summer Residential Portion July 14th-July 26th
  • Summer Overnight College Tours July 30th-August 2nd/3rd

    Education and Training:

  • Have completed sophomore year in college or university
  • Be in good academic standing at college or university

    Additional Information:

    This is a part-time, non-exempt position. Compensation is a $3,000.00 stipend, payable by contract.
