Essential Job Duties

The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (“BME”) at UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University (NC State) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure eligible faculty position at the rank of Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor with an anticipated start date in August 2019. The Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor will support the undergraduate educational mission in our department at both institutions.
The primary role of this hire will be to help develop and teach vertically integrated biomedical engineering design. This role will include teaching one sophomore OR junior design course and one senior design course totaling 80 students each semester. Additionally, the instructor will run studio/labs, deliver content, and help manage teams working on biomedical engineering design projects. Administrative roles of this position include student advising, course administration, material collection and preparation for ABET accreditation renewal, and assistance with planning and preparation of public student design presentations. Additionally, the individual in this role will be expected to collaborate and work very closely with the Director of BME Design, all other design instructors, administration, and students at both campuses, occasionally travelling to RTP or the other campus. Finally, the instructor will be expected to help contribute to publications and presentations highlighting the innovations of the JBME design program.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor will provide instruction and technical support for undergraduates in both upper level and introductory level design courses (i.e., from sophomore through senior-year). These courses will include one or more of the following areas of BME: Sophomore Design, Junior Design, and Senior design. The Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor will be expected to work with local industry, academic, and healthcare professionals to help build the BME Design Program. The individual must work productively and collaboratively with all design instructors at both institutions, as well as the Director of the BME Design Program, and with all constituent BME entities, i.e. UNC College of Arts and Sciences, UNC School of Medicine and the NC State College of Engineering. The Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor will be expected to assist with the creation and dissemination of any novel educational or pedagogical techniques or observations. Conference travel may be required. The individual will be expected to assist with the preparation of materials for ABET accreditation. The instructional load for this position will be 2 to 3 courses per semester for a total of 4 to 6 courses taught each academic year. The course load may be split between UNC and NC State.
The successful candidate will also be expected to assist with undergraduate advising, curriculum planning, and design curriculum implementation.

This role will require teaching, advising, course administration, word processing, presentation creation, rapid prototyping (3D printing, laser cutting, or CNC machining), project and team management. Masters in Biomedical Engineering or related field. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated teaching excellence at the university level, particularly in the target course areas listed above.
