The University of Miami Leonard Miller School of Medicine

The University of Miami Leonard Miller School of Medicine (UMMSOM) is the oldest medical school in Florida. Headquartered in downtown Miami, the medical campus provides a full range of inpatient, outpatient, and surgical services, with 1,200 physicians and scientists. Additional facilities extend into Palm Beach, Broward, and Collier Counties and include the University of Miami Hospital, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Lennar Foundation Medical Center. The UMMSOM is affiliated with Jackson Health System, several hospitals, one of the largest public health systems in the U.S., and the Miami VA System. The UMMSOM offers leading programs in transplantation, cancer care, ophthalmology, neurosciences and genomics, including outstanding pediatric programs in all areas.

With more than 2,000 active research projects and $260 million in private and public funding, the University of Miami ranks among the top 40 NIH-funded medical schools. Core services and research support structures are provided, as well as mentoring, education and consultation through the Miami Clinical Translational Science Institute. Education is central to UMMSOM, which offers programs in medicine, public health, and combined degrees included MD/MBA, MD/MPH, MD/PhD, MD/JD, and an MD/MS in Genomic Medicine.

Department of Pediatrics

Pediatrics at the University of Miami is a department of 150 faculty and 350 staff, caring for patients of South Florida and Latin America through the University of Miami Medical Group and at Jackson Health Systems. The Department staffs three hospitals – the 225-bed Holtz Children’s Hospital and two community hospitals; it also provides care at nine ambulatory sites. Community outreach extends through the Pediatric Mobile Clinic, nine school clinic sites, and the Injury Free Mobile Program. The Department operates the Debbie School, a 150-student early child care facility focused on children with special needs and special education training. In addition, the South Florida Poison Control Center and the Child Protection Team are housed within Pediatrics. The Batchelor Children’s Research Institute and the Mailman Center for Child Development house research and clinical activities, including wet labs and animal facilities. Faculty are responsible for the education of 200 medical students (both MD and combined MD/MPH) annually, 66 categorical pediatric residents, 20 med/peds residents, 40 fellows in nine subspecialties, masters, doctoral and post-doctoral students in child psychology, and several other ancillary areas. Research advancement is augmented by the annual Micah Batchelor Awards.

Interested Candidates

The Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking a board certified/eligible Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level for its expanding pediatric stem cell transplantation and collection programs.  The candidate will serve as Director of the program to provide the next generation of leadership for the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cell Therapy Program. Appointment will be tenure or non-tenure earning, at a faculty level commensurate with experience. Applicants must have an MD or equivalent degree and be board certi­fied in pediatric hematology/oncology. The Pediatric BMT Program currently has four clinical faculty members, is FACT accredited, and is a referral center for the region and Latin America. The primary responsibility of the Program Director will be effective program coordination and management, enhancement of quality and outcomes, and expansion of clinical, laboratory and translational research efforts. The successful candidate will have a track record in BMT/cellular therapy and will exhibit the qualities required for team building and being a successful leader in a complex, matrixed environment, including the ability to work collaboratively and effectively promote the program.


Successful candidates will have a reputation for commitment to clinical care.  A record of clinical translational science is preferred.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology

The Division currently has comprehensive programs in oncology, neuro-oncology, sickle-cell disease, and hemophilia. The Division is an integral part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, a leading research institution, and the UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Department of Pediatrics ranks as one of the top Pediatric Programs for NIH funding. Excellent opportunities for participation in clinical or translational research collaborations are available within existing programs in tumor biology and immunology, tolerance and graft-versus-host disease. The Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology is a full member of COG and has active federally funded programs in pediatric oncology and sickle cell disease within the state-of-the-art UM Batchelor Children's Research Institute. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong academic and clinical background.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology has undergone rapid growth with nine faculty members at present, three funded research laboratories, over 10 advanced practice nurses, four of whom are dedicated to the BMT program, a fellowship program, and is poised to continue this progress with investment from the Department, School, and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Faculty have access to several outstanding interdisciplinary programs including the UM CTSI, SPOREs, flagship programs in genomics/epigenomics and outcomes research and survivorship, amongst others.
