Basic Function

The Student Life Advisor (SLA) serves as the campus administrator responsible for the coordination of recognized student clubs and interest groups. The SLA assists with the development and revision of college-wide Student Life policy manuals. The SLA advises student leaders on academic issues and their development in their leadership roles. Assists the Coordinator for Student Life to plan, implement and evaluate major student life campus and college-wide educational and leadership programs including conferences, retreats and the leadership training workshop series.

Duties and Responsibilities

Advise students on program development and management, purchasing, college policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations related to student life programming. Plan, implement and evaluate student leadership training programs including retreats, conferences, and workshop series. Teach transferable skills in organization/delegation, meeting organization, and ethical decision making. Supervise and work with students and faculty advisors in campus organizations. Coordinate and facilitate collaborations with student groups, academic departments, administrative departments, and the community. Work effectively with a highly diverse student population. Work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks in a timely manner. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Experience working in an academic environment including program planning and implementation. Prior experience in managing and monitoring budgets.
Introductory computer skills required, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat Reader and the use of the internet to complete research. Work nights and weekends as needed. Advise and counsel students on educational plans or personal concerns and make referrals to campus or community resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in a relevant field. Demonstrated experience in customer service positions, and managing budgets.
Previous experience working with student life or residential life programs in an academic environment. Experience supervising staff; OR a combination of training, education, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field. Significant experience managing budgets. Experience as an administrator and educator in a college student life or residence life program, or combination of education, training and experience.
Prior experience with PeopleSoft and eVA Preferred. Prior Community College experience preferred.

Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of constituents, including students, alumni, parents, supervisors, faculty and staff. Ability to interpret and explain academic and administrative policies and procedures. Knowledge of college objectives, organization, structure and mission
•Maintaining and established work scheduled, including evening and weekends.
•Assists in preparing and providing student support services to promote the personal development of a diverse student population.
•Develop goals and objectives to align with Student Services division annual planning goals.
•Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism
•Utilize instructional methods and techniques for student life initiatives
•Understand principles, theories, and practices of budget management
•Understand principles, theories, and practices of purchasing goods and services
•Determine how money will be spent to get the work done, and accounting for these expenditures.
•Develop approaches for implementation of an idea, program or change in operations
•Control or direct the operation of a program or function
•Obtain and see to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to perform tasks associated with Student Life coordination.
•Deliver presentations or training using acceptable methods and techniques
•Supervise others by assigning/directing work; conducting employee evaluations, staff training and development, taking appropriate disciplinary/corrective actions, making hiring/termination recommendations, etc.
•Ability to prioritize multiple projects
•Ability to effectively manage change
•Ability to develop, write, plan and implement short and long-range goals
•Communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and oral communication skills.
