Position Summary

Performs solid and construction waste, compost, and recycling collection and processing primarily by operating CDL required vehicles and operating heavy equipment. Additionally, this position provides assistance in all areas of the Facilities Services Department including but not limited to: Custodial, Landscape Services, General Services, and Safety Services.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Waste and Recycling
*Operates college trash, recycling and compost collection trucks, loads and transports trash,
food waste, and recyclables to designated locations.

*Operates forklift, bucket loader, and associated equipment to load/unload trucks/tractor trailers and to process materials.

*Provides and services construction boxes as requested.

*Transports ash from the biomass facility to designated location(s).

*Places and maintains containers, boxes, and bins associated with waste collection including: compost, recycling, trash, and ash.

*Performs daily pre and post trip inspection reports as required by federal law. Maintains records associated with trucking information. Records mileage, hours, fuel and maintenance of fleet.

*Maintains accurate records of waste and recyclable volumes, labor expenditures, and shipping information.

*Prepares daily work order log.

*Participates in discussions related to material handling and makes recommendations for material handling, etc.

*Sorts co-mingled recyclables and removes contamination.

*Cleans and maintains the MRF and associated equipment.

Schedules and coordinates daily work assignments, often working independently.

Supervises student employees and other staff involved with Waste Management operations.

Secures building at end of shift, locks doors, and turns out lights.

Answers inquiries regarding hours, schedules, recycling procedures, etc.

Collects money from reuse trailer sales, makes change, and accounts for money collected.

Picks up and shreds confidential documents.
Assists with universal, hazardous, and oily
waste collections, storage, and shipping.

*Attends RCRA and DOT trainings as required.

General Services:
*Picks up and delivers materials, furniture and equipment to varied locations.

*Sets up and removes articles for special events.

*Assists in the general warehousing of equipment, furniture and materials.

*Provides delivery service, organizes warehousing and monitors all campus storage.

Custodial:
*Cleans and disinfects bathrooms and kitchens; restocks supplies.

*Vacuums, dust mops and wet mops floors, and spot washes walls. Dusts or vacuums furniture.

*Arranges classroom furniture, cleans chalkboards & whiteboards, restocks chalk, markers and erasers.

*Cleans entrances and elevators. Sweeps outside steps and polices the outside perimeter of the building.

*Collects and removes all trash.

*Arranges furniture in social spaces/lounges.

*Identifies damage and missing items from assigned areas and reports to team leader or
supervisor.

Responsible for cleaning up any blood spills/accidents using proper procedures.

Landscape Services:
*Maintains and cares for campus grounds.

*Operates equipment for summer and winter grounds maintenance.

*Sets up bleachers.

*Removes litter and debris from campus grounds.

*Prepares topsoil, seeds, waters, fertilizes areas for new grasses.

*Aerates, over seeds, weeds, fertilizes, mows, rakes and maintains turf areas.

*Assists in snow removal from steps, roads and walkways as assigned.

*Plants, waters, weeds, prunes and mulches flower beds and shrub and tree beds.

Performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.

Safety Services:
*Conducts routine safety related inspections and completes associated documentation as instructed and assigned.

*Completes other routine and project related tasks which support safety initiatives such as installing signage and painting “stay clear” zones.

Other
*Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established

Middlebury College and departmental policies and procedures.

Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Good interpersonal skills.

Interact appropriately with customers and college community.

Must be available to work flexible shifts and overtime. Ability to work Saturdays and Sundays as part of a regular or rotating work shift.

Performs other duties as assigned to assist department in obtaining and maintaining its mission.

Must participate in DOT approved drug and alcohol test pool.

General Responsibilities

Qualifications

Education
  • High school diploma preferred. Must have a fork-lift certification or the ability to obtain.
  • Equipment operation experience is required.
  • Must have valid Commercial driver’s license (CDL), and ability to obtain a Middlebury College license. A good driving record and good driving skills are required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic equipment operation.
  • Organizational skills required.
  • Knowledge of safe working and lifting practices and procedures.
  • Must be willing to attend RCRA and DOT training and pass associated tests.
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience driving large (CDL) required vehicles is preferred.
  • Experience operating bucket loaders, back-hoes and snow plows is preferred.
