Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under general supervision, the research assistant 2 will plan and carry out molecular biology and biochemistry, maintain mammalian/insect cell lines, as well as express and purify proteins. The major research interests of the lab are to explore the molecular mechanisms of ion-channels and receptors that are involved in basic brain functions and neurodegenerative diseases. The laboratory uses a wide variety of techniques including molecular, cellular, and structural biology.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Plan and carry out general molecular biology, including design and implement cloning strategies. Conduct PCR, mutagenesis, restriction enzyme digestion and analysis, gel electrophoresis, gel purification, ligation, cloning, plasmid preparation, bacterial transformation, bacterial culturing, DNA purification, sequencing, sequence analysis, recombination, and RNA preparation. (28%)
  2. Collect data and perform calculations involving molarity, solutions percentages, and serial dilutions, and provide analysis. (20%).
  3. Maintain cell cultures including mammalian, insect and bacterial cells. Perform small to medium scale protein production and purification Perform transfect or infect mammalian and insect cells with expression vectors. (20%)
  4. May assist in developing improved techniques, projection methods or procedures for maintaining mammalian/insect cell lines. (10%)
  5. Oversee inventory and order laboratory supplies. (6%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Train new staff; direct the work of the students. (4%)
  2. The incumbent will also perform laboratory maintenance duties, including buffer, media, gel and reagent preparation, and disposal of bio-hazardous waste. (4%)
  3. Prepare, operate and trouble shoot equipment in experimental procedures (4%)
  4. Perform other duties as assigned. (4%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with investigators to discuss research, research education, direction, goals and time management. Frequent contact with laboratory employees in collaboration in common research project.

University: Occasional contact with staff and faculty as needed to share information. Utilize core university facilities for experimentation and maintain strong relationship with core mangers for research collaborations.

External: Limited contact with sales representatives for product inquiries.

Students: Occasional contact with students as needed to share information.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and 1 to 3 years of related experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 2 to 4 years of experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Basic knowledge of molecular and cellular biology
  2. Follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  3. Ability to operate molecular and cellular biology laboratory equipment.
  4. Effective verbal and communication skills.
  5. Ability to interact with colleagues and supervisors face to face
  6. Ability to work effectively independently and within a team.
  7. Good organization skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize and give attention to detail in order to complete tasks and meet deadlines.
  8. Ability to follow-through on assigned projects and provide timely follow-up as needed.
  9. Ability to rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  10. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  11. Skills in protein expression and purification are a plus
  12. Prefer 1 year of experience in molecular biology and protein production.
  13. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  14. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical laboratory environment. The employee will work with frequent interruptions and distractions. There is exposure to research specific chemicals and appropriate laboratory apparel might be required including lab coat, gloves and safety glasses when appropriate.
