The BSOM Research and Graduate Studies Office promotes development and facilitation of programs in research and in pre- and post-doctoral PhD training in the biomedical sciences. The office is dedicated to sustaining excellence in graduate education and to strengthening the vital link between research and the educational process. The BSOM Research and Graduate Studies Office has oversight for research activities in the Brody School of Medicine, and coordinates activities with other divisions of the university as they relate to research and graduate studies in a collaborative fashion.

Job Duties

The Medical Research Scientist will oversee the day-to-day functions of the BSOM Flow Cytometry Core Facility including instrumentation management.

This is a leadership position expected to take initiative in exploring new technologies and give occasional technology seminars.
In addition this position will nurture relationships with developers and manufacturers of flow cytometry technology, encourage the use of the facility as a test site for new technology and consult with off-site academic and non-academic institutions regarding the use of flow cytometry to meet their application needs.

The Medical Research Scientist will be responsible for the identification, evaluation, acquisition and/or development of new technology to meet the future needs of an expanding group of principal investigators.

The Medical Research Scientist will train users and also develop training SOPs for new instrumentation or processes as needed and see to its implementation, set up new instruments: rules and regulations, education manual and user training.

The Medical Research Scientist will also be responsible for the following responsibilities:

Developing intramural and extramural funding proposals for new instrumentation

Consulting/contributing to faculty extramural grant applications involving new or existing instrumentation and flow cytometry techniques

Completion of the BD flow cytometry training course pertinent to core instrumentation

Contribute to assay development, quality control processes, and technical validation for users

Train new lab members in relevant techniques and analyses

Perform preventative maintenance and calibration of equipment at regular intervals

Document technical issues and the corrective actions required and completed

Maintain appropriate levels of reagents and consumables

Advertise and give seminars to ECU researchers about the capabilities of the core, both current and future

Attend and participate in conferences to understand new and innovative flow cytometry techniques

Communicate with vendors regarding service contracts, maintenance, and repairs

Develop and update content for flow core facilities website

Communicate equipment status and updates to users and BSOM leadership

Work with BSOM and ECU officials to complete the annual University Core Facility renewal process including the development of service fee schedules

Minimum Education/Experience

This position requires completion of a Master’s degree in the biological sciences or related field.

Three years of experience in flow cytometry

Supervisory experience

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
