About Greenfield Community College:
Greenfield Community College is located in the beautiful and historic Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, between the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and the fertile farmland of the Connecticut River watershed. GCC is a public community college serving over 4,800 people annually in credit courses and credit-free workshops. Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Reporting directly to the Dean of Students or their designee and working in close collaboration with the Academic Advising team, the Academic Advisor & Success Coach will provide direct services to students that include academic advising, degree planning, and case management to support academic success for students in a variety of academic programs ranging from liberal arts undecided to students preparing for selective admission programs such as nursing. Serving as a liaison to academic departments and student support programs, the Academic Advisor & Success Coach will conduct career exploration and goal clarification activities with individuals and groups to help students achieve their academic goals by developing a structured academic plan that facilitates the success of students regardless of their major.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Use a proactive advising model to advise students through individual and small group sessions;
  • Determine student learning sequence requirements;
  • Work collaboratively with Testing Center staff and faculty to determine appropriate placement upon entrance into the college;
  • Assist students with setting goals and identifying and overcoming potential obstacles;
  • Develop and implement workshops focused on academic fluency skills;
  • Monitor student academic progress;
  • Provides referrals to alternate advising resources and other college services;
  • Participates in activities of the Academic Advising Center team including supporting advising functions at College Recruitment & Enrollment Events;
  • Attend and contribute to regular Academic Advising Center meetings and activities;
  • Use resources for career exploration to help students identify relevant career-pathway options and refine appropriate course selection and degree completion plans;
  • Implement non-cognitive assessments to support exploration of student strengths, interests, and talents;
  • Collaborate closely with program-specific faculty advisors to facilitate smooth transition as appropriate for students who have selected specific academic and career pathways;
  • Teach first-year experience courses focused on academic strategies and career exploration and planning;
  • Participate in professional development related to the duties of the position;
  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.




Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, psychology, or closely related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience required.
  • At least three years of experience or training in college academic and/or career advisement;
  • Ability to effectively analyze data and use data for planning and assessment;
  • Ability to exercise discretion and interpret privacy regulations governed by FERPA;
  • Ability to effectively advise students with a variety of diverse characteristics including racial and ethnic diversity, learning style differences, and variety of age and life experiences;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to provide mentoring, motivation, incentive and leadership to students;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with college students, staff and administrators.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual
  • Experience working with first generation college students;
  • Experience in a community college with open enrollment practices;
  • Experience working with developmental education in a college environment;
  • Experience with career advisement and coaching;
  • Knowledge of the implementation of non-cognitive assessments.

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT:
Applicants who do not meet the qualifications as stated above are encouraged to put in writing precisely how their background and experience have prepared them with the equivalent combination of education, training and experience required for the responsibilities of this position.

GRADE AND SALARY: Grade 5. Anticipated salary range is $54,956 to $65,337. The appointment salary is based on one's education and experience as dictated by the collective bargaining agreement classification compensation structure. Candidates are therefore advised that it is unlikely the offered salary will be at or near the top of the range.

START DATE: July 2019
