Position summary:
The Department of Music at the University of Dayton, College of Arts and Sciences, is seeking a dynamic, creative musician and Instrumental Music Education specialist to serve as Music Education Degree Program Coordinator. This is a nine-month, non-tenure track position starting August 16, 2019.

The selected candidate will:
1) Teach Introduction to Music Education, Instrumental Music Education Methods and Pedagogy, Diverse Populations in the Music Classroom, Professional Development Workshop, Seminar in Student Teaching, and other courses depending on departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise (e.g., Woodwind, Brass, or String Pedagogy, Elementary Classroom Methods).
2) Coordinate the undergraduate music education degree program. This involves supervising students in their student teaching placements, serving as the Department of Music liaison to the School of Education and Health Sciences and to K-12 schools, advising music education students on university and teacher licensure requirements, and directing the Second-Year Review process for all Music Education majors.
3) Actively engage in student recruitment, which includes visiting high schools to connect with music teachers and prospective music students, attending music education conferences especially the annual Ohio Music Education Association conference, and representing the Department of Music at recruitment events on and off campus.

Required Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Music Education or closely related field
• At least one degree in music education
• Instrumental music education specialization
• Evidence of 3 years experience teaching school instrumental music, grades 4-8 or 9-12
• Knowledge of current methodologies in music education
• Music Teaching licensure (current or past)
• Articulated vision to build a vibrant and diverse undergraduate music education program
• Strong written communication skills
• Ability to travel independently on a regular basis to off-campus sites

Preferred Qualifications:
While everyone may not possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
• Additional graduate education in music or music education leading to the doctoral degree
• Demonstrated success in teaching undergraduate music education courses (GTA experience considered)
• Knowledge of edTPA (Teacher Performance Assessment)
• Experience successfully supervising student teachers
• Experience successfully teaching students from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to collaborate with varied and diverse constituencies in and beyond the department
• Successful experience with university curriculum design
• Knowledge of teacher licensure requirements in at least one state in the United States
• Experience teaching general/classroom music in K-12 school settings
• Successful experience teaching instrumental music grades 4-8 or 9-12
• Experience with culturally responsive pedagogy
• Knowledge of diverse musics (e.g., non-Western, popular, jazz) and experience incorporating these into music curricula
• Ability to present material clearly and effectively in the classroom
• Ability to employ active learning strategies to foster and maintain student engagement
• Successful engagement with local and regional music programs at both the high school and middle school levels
• Demonstrated excellence as a conductor
• Strong oral/aural communication skills
• Effective interpersonal communication skills
• Articulated willingness to engage with Catholic and Marianist educational values
• Ability to meet additional departmental teaching needs, such as music technology, applied studio instruction, or elective courses for non-music majors
