DESCRIPTION

The Associate Director, Industry Engagement/Career Coach, is responsible for fostering relationships with alumni employers and industry leaders and building the UC San Diego Alumni Network through the formation of an engagement program to serve nearly 150,000 alumni, developing partnerships within and outside of the campus community, fostering peer-to-peer networking, growing relationships with individuals within corporations, and scaling resources to serve the alumni community.

The incumbent is responsible for the development, planning, management and evaluation of alumni engagement within key industries, as well as engagement with top alumni employers. This position reports directly to the Executive Director, Career Center and works collaboratively with internal and external partners to establish and sustain the growth of the UC San Diego alumni network. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures. Plans, develops and implements strategies for specific programs, events, policies, constituency groups, etc. Assignments typically include a wide range of external and alumni relations issues and constituencies.

The incumbent is expected to synthesize and communicate insights which enable stakeholders to better understand opportunities in engaging alumni in particular industries. Specifically, the incumbent will engage the alumni community in programs and services; manage the information and data pertaining to alumni participation, engagement and philanthropic motivations; examine alumni interactions across regions and industries, and provide constructive mechanisms to engage alumni; develop annual plans and reports that integrates Advancement objectives and demonstrates return on investment.

The incumbent will foster strong working relationships with academic divisions to advance alumni participation goals; and, provide input for the creation and dissemination of relevant and timely communication in collaboration with the Marketing and Communications colleagues in Alumni, Career, Annual Giving, Pipeline Development and International. The incumbent will also seek to grow business development opportunities with top alumni employers, as well as grow philanthropy among engaged alumni.

In addition, incumbent will provide customized career advising services to undergraduate and graduate students and alumni, both to individuals and to groups. Incumbent will utilize industry connections and partnerships to develop and maintain a high level of expertise in related specialization content area to benefit career development programs for students and alumni, and provide comprehensive career advising services to help students and alumni be successful in their career search and advancement.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Must have access to reliable transportation.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from college with a major in business administration, economics, statistics, educational administration, political science, or an allied field, and four (4) years of experience in administrative analysis or operations working as a project manager, business development or marketing manager, customer service or sales manager or other high technology industry team manager; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in the full spectrum of business development of corporate partners including critical analysis, management of academic/corporate relationships.

  • Thorough knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and procedures of building and maintaining effective relations with alumni, internal and key constituencies.

  • Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communications, tact and political acumen to effectively represent the campus.

  • Skill in project management, including event planning and meeting deadlines. Demonstrated skill to exercise effective control of situations or events in the absence of higher authority and ability to make recommendations or decisions that affect office operations and activities.

  • Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques. Job search techniques to include industries.

  • Proven skill in researching and evaluating information, preparing concise, well-organized reports, summaries, correspondence, policy documents and personalized letters, often for C-level executives. Possess technology literacy across disciplines to understand company research and recruiting interests.

  • Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices and experience in drafting and overseeing a program budget. Ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative data, and to develop and publish reports for external constituencies.

  • Broad knowledge, understanding, and experience working across all major regions of California, especially San Diego, the Bay area, and Los Angeles.

  • Strong personnel management skills to provide guidance to maintain a strong team of players. Ability to train, provide work direction and evaluate staff. Ability to make good faith effort to advocate UCSD's affirmative action program when participating in recruiting individuals.

  • Proven ability in guiding and mentoring less experienced staff. Leadership ability to provide a welcoming work environment and assist with onboarding of new staff including orienting to the organization and culture and guidance to staff.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations to provide direction to special programs for outreach to prospective and existing alumni.

  • Ability to design and modify computer applications to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication and organization skills.

  • Thorough research, analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills and skill to correctly identify real and potential problems, advising management as required, and proposing effective strategic resolutions.

  • Ability to use initiative, creativity and resourcefulness to accomplish duties. Ability to work in a very busy interactive environment with frequent interruptions and to perform tasks accurately and quickly.
