The Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College’s primary objective is to recruit and prepare tomorrow’s visionary leaders. The Honors College at Claflin University provides a comprehensive academic and college experience that includes high-level learning, ongoing academic advising, cultural enrichment opportunities, community services experiences, and other programs designed to enhance and develop students’ academic and leadership potential.

 

 

Responsibilities

The Director of the ACT Honors College leads Claflin University’s outstanding honors program and partners with faculty to develop an academically rigorous curriculum that fosters intellectual development and contributes to the culture of the university.   The Director is responsible for identifying and recruiting a diverse and talented pool of students who exhibit a commitment to academic excellence and dedication to intellectually rigorous disciplines.

The Director will collaborate with university leadership and key university and community stakeholders to offer an honors curriculum that supports the strategic vision of the University while creating unique academic experiences for Honors College students. The Director will play a critical role in facilitating partnerships that pair Honors College students with prestigious scholarship/fellowship programs and provides research opportunities that challenge each student and encourage further intellectual growth. Once ACT Honors College students complete their program, they are well positioned to enter the next stage of their academic careers in graduate or professional school or achieve professional success by becoming leaders in their respective industries.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate commitment to the Claflin University mission, vision, and Guiding Principles;
  • Demonstrate commitment to The Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College program;
  • Work with administration, faculty and staff to advance the strategic initiatives of the University and the Honors College;
  • Possess and demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills and present a professional work demeanor and attire;
  • Responsible for day to day management and supervision of the Honors Program and Honors Staff;
  • Responsible for working with administration and staff to develop operational goals and objectives for the Honors Program;
  • Actively engage in recruitment efforts that attract and retain multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary and diverse talent;
  • Manage the application and selection process of students applying to and being admitted into the Honors Program;
  • Work with Deans, Department Chairs, and academic departments to develop intellectually rigorous curriculum that supports academic growth and student retention
  • Teach Leadership Courses.
  • Serve as liaison with Student Services (Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Counseling, Careers, Retention, Service Learning), the Leadership Development Center, and Career Development Center to collect, maintain, provide and advise students on graduate schools, scholarship/fellowship opportunities, application strategies, and job placement;
  • Advise and monitor academic performance of Honors College students;
  • Recruit faculty advisors/mentors for Honors Program and provide resources to faculty on assisting students with researching and presenting Honors Thesis’;
  • Plan and co-sponsor lectures, seminars, colloquia, and social events for Honors College students and Honors community;
  • Plan and supervise Honors College events to include The Freshman Retreat, Honors Convocation, and Honors Week activities (thesis presentations, Banquet, Society inductions);
  • Implement and monitor community service requirements and compliance;
  • Collaborate with the administration and faculty to identify, inform and prepare students for opportunities to apply for prestigious fellowships/scholarships such as Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright, Gates, Cambridge, Truman United Nations, Semester in Washington, and other distinguished awards.
  • Maintain enrollment and active participation in appropriate organizations, such as the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC); Southern Regional Honors Council (SRHC), and The National Association of African American Honors Programs (NAAAHP), to name a few
  • Coordinate student participation in national, state, and regional honors conferences and organizations;
  • Supervise implementation of the Honors College Honor Code, student disciplinary action(s), dismissal(s), and appeal(s);

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

A doctorate in an academic discipline offered at Claflin is preferred. Candidates with a master’s degree and extensive honors program administration will be considered. A minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching in or administration of an honors program at the college or university level required. Experience working with academically gifted/talented students preferred. Candidates should have proven experience supervising and guiding honors theses.

Applicant must have a demonstrated record of teaching, scholarship, diplomacy, engaging, advising, and mentoring students, and strong record of effective student advocacy. Must possess understanding and knowledge of a successful honors college/program. Must possess experience working with an Honors/Honors like Program or in administration relevant to leading to an Honors Programs. Must possess and exhibit effective organizational, management, and budget management skills.

Applicant must demonstrate a strong commitment to student achievement and post-academic success. Must also have an awareness and commitment to academic and cultural diversity and inclusiveness, knowledge of current trends, developments, and curriculum practices. Must possess and exhibit excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Applicant must be capable of effectively communicating the Honors Program’s mission and initiatives to constituents and stakeholders. Applicant must be able to work effectively and congenially with faculty, staff, students, alumnae, board members, potential and current donors, and other academic stakeholders to develop and maintain collaborative relationships. Flexibility and a willingness to contribute to areas outside of core job responsibilities required.

Applicant must have good computer literacy skills and ability to use and/or proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and other software platforms.

Applicant should be able to work a flexible schedule which may include occasional evening or weekend commitments such as supervising travel of student to local, regional, or distant locations.
