Requisition Number:17774Location: Boulder, Colorado Employment Type:Research FacultySchedule:Full-Time Close All Job SummaryThe Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at University of Colorado Boulder is opening a full-time position for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Assimilation of Chemical Constituents for its collaborative research as a Cooperative Institute with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL)/Global Systems Division (GSD) in Boulder, Colorado. The position is for three years and is located in Boulder, CO.
Background:
The Chemistry Group at NOAA/ESRL/GSD is involved in the development of regional and global chemical models and data assimilation systems that rely on ensemble and variational approaches. The position within the Group is intended to advance skill of the global aerosol forecasting at NOAA by developing a state-of-the art assimilation system. The background chemical model relies on an implementation of aerosol modules from the Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) modeling system within the new NOAA’s FV3 dynamical core. Observations include primarily those of Aerosol Optical Depths from various satellite instruments and other remotely sensed measurements. The assimilation framework will be imbedded within the Joint Effort for Data assimilation Integration (JEDI) that is being developed at the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA). It is expected that this work will lead to a transition of the system to operations at National Centers of Environment Prediction (NCEP). Collaboration partners include various government agencies. The position offers an excellent opportunity for professional and personal growth through research and cooperation.Who We AreAt CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, more than 800 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at the Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, and solid Earth sciences. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.
