CIRES/GSD Data Assimilation of Chemical Constituents Post-Doc Researcher
The Chemistry Group at NOAA/ESRL/GSD is involved in the development of regional and global chemical models and data assimilation systems that rely on ensemble and variational approaches. The position within the Group is intended to advance skill of the global aerosol forecasting at NOAA by developing a state-of-the art assimilation system. The background chemical model relies on an implementation of aerosol modules from the Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) modeling system within the new NOAA’s FV3 dynamical core. Observations include primarily those of Aerosol Optical Depths from various satellite instruments and other remotely sensed measurements. The assimilation framework will be imbedded within the Joint Effort for Data assimilation Integration (JEDI) that is being developed at the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA). It is expected that this work will lead to a transition of the system to operations at National Centers of Environment Prediction (NCEP). Collaboration partners include various government agencies. - Developing and implementing assimilation methodologies appropriate for chemical species within JEDI.
- Evaluating performance of model and assimilation.
- Engaging in additional activities in NWP related to ongoing projects in GSD, including both regional and global modeling.
- Authoring scientific publications and presenting at conferences, workshops, and meetings.
- Contributing to reports and research proposals.
- Availability to travel at the level of 2-3 trips/year.
This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305. If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.

- PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Applied Math, Physics, or a related research area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Advanced understanding of data assimilation concepts.
- Excellent programming in object-oriented languages (modern Fortran or C++) and scripting skills; knowledge of python, R, or similar for data processing and visualization.
- Ability to work on collaborative projects using code management tools (e.g. git).
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Knowledge of atmospheric radiative transfer for aerosols and gases.
- Generation of adjoint code.
- Experience using statistics for model verification.
- Experience with parallelization of computer codes.
