The normal workday is 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday. However, this role may require occasional travel, night, and weekend duties in fulfillment of the responsibilities of the position. The position is an exempt position and not eligible for overtime or comp time based on the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

The primary responsibilities of the Academic Advisor I are to meet with assigned students, provide each student with accurate information about the student’s intended degree program, make recommendations about course selection for upcoming semesters, generate advising forms detailing these recommendations, and maintain notes about these meetings.

Advisors also assist students with referrals to departments and other colleges at UGA, study abroad programs, tutoring and other forms of academic assistance, etc. Advisors at this level are expected to have full knowledge of resources that support students in areas other than their academic life and to refer students to appropriate individuals and offices as needed.

An Academic Advisor I must maintain consistent contact with their students, maintain accurate student records and respond in a timely manner to questions from their students.

Regular attendance at staff meetings is mandatory and workshop and retreat attendance is also an expected part of the position. All Advisors must be available and able to work in a group setting at a designated location throughout June, July and early August orientation sessions for incoming freshmen and transfers.

Student Advising

-Meet individually with students to provide complete information and answer all questions related to the real estate program’s majors, the department’s two certificate programs, and the Terry College.
-Seek input from and respond to advice from the directors of these three programs.
-Support the department’s other advisor as appropriate.

Advise During All UGA Orientation Sessions

-Work under the direction of the UGA Exploratory Center and the Terry College Director of Undergraduate Programs to advise incoming freshmen and transfer students as assigned during all UGA orientation sessions (includes summer and spring orientation dates).

Attend Meetings & Professional Development

-Maintain knowledge of the rules and policies of the school affecting degree/certificate programs by regularly attending mandatory staff/advisor meetings.
-Regularly attending advisor workshops and other professional development opportunities closely related to academic advising (i.e., Certificate in Advising, Diversity Certificate and others).
-Attend Terry and UGA functions as required (including but not limited to Terry Majors Fair, Terry Convocation, Terry Major Orientation, UGA Orientation Sessions, Welcome Back Events, Advisor Workshops, etc.).
-Meet periodically with supervisor, program directors, other department advisor, and Exploratory Center director to coordinate assignments and enhance internal communication efforts.

Interaction with Employers

-Talk with potential employers about the real estate major and the curriculum.
