Position Information

Duties

The Director of Instructional Design Services will lead the course design and development process for the university. The director will be tasked to build and promote a culture of active engagement with faculty to create quality online courses by using the Quality Matters course quality assurance program. The director supervises the instructional design team to manage and complete planned projects; encourages and promotes innovative uses of instructional technology through professional development activities with faculty and other stakeholders; collaborates with academic leadership to develop annual plans for course design and development projects; works with departments and faculty in the ongoing campus initiative to improve the quality of all coursework, regardless of delivery method; applies instructional design skills and best practices at all levels and stages of active projects; builds expertise of self and design team through ongoing professional development in instructional design; and continuously assess and improves the quality of the services provided.
The Instructional Design Services team will be co-located with Academic Technology Services in the new Athens Teaching and Learning Innovations Space (ATLIS). The mission for ATLIS is to be a faculty centered resource for collaboration and professional development in teaching and learning. ATLIS will house collaboration & teleconference facilities, audio/video recording studios, and instructional technology support.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Lead instructional design and course quality enhancement services for the university
•Collaborate with academic leadership to establish a course improvement lifecycle
•Develop and implement a structured methodology for course reviews and improvements using the Quality Matters rubric
•Develop, share, and refine techniques and strategies to be used in quality online course design
•Build synergy between faculty as subject matter experts and the instructional designers as practitioners of quality course design techniques.
•Manage and enhance the course design process to meet project deadlines.
•Keep Quality Matters standards and other adopted teaching best practices at the center of all course reviews and designs.
•Use Quality Matters standards and other adopted teaching best practices to establish a common language to build understanding of the process and create opportunities for assessing success.
•Empower the instructional design team through participative goal setting and decision-making.
•Establish the expectations for all stakeholders who deliver and use instructional design resources
•Develop strategies for growing campus enthusiasm and support for the Quality Matters course quality system
•Develop and maintain a structured peer-review system for faculty to improve and innovate new pedagogical techniques
•Develop innovative ways to promote and use technology in both online and on-ground courses.
•Actively contribute ideas for professional development activities related to instructional design and technology tools
•Assist university constituents in the development and maintenance of distance learning policies and procedures.
•Develop and maintain the department annual assessment plan and report by setting goals, measuring outcomes, and using results for improvement toward meeting faculty needs and course quality standards
•Create and nurture a cooperative and collaborative atmosphere that emphasizes customer service and support
•Establish consistent expectations with all customers following established service protocols and timelines for efficient and effective service delivery
•Practice quality customer service in all interactions with the University community
•Continuously improve the department through efficiency and end-user empowerment in support of the University mission
•Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to changing work scope and task based on needs
•Proactively engages in problem solving related to tasks in this position with internal and external people
•Identifies opportunities for improvements to work practices and offers viable solutions for implementation
•Practice self-monitoring by assessing self to make improvements or take corrective action
•Actively works towards building cooperative and collaborative relationships with peers and internal customers

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
•Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
•Demonstrated experience in online education
•Teaching experience at a regionally accredited postsecondary institution
•Strong computer and technology related skills
•Demonstrated success in the development and design of higher education courses
•Successful creation and delivery of training sessions / materials
•Strong interpersonal communication skills (written and verbal)
•Strong presentation and public speaking skills
•Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex topics to a variety of audiences
•Strong organization and multi-tasking skills

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:
•Doctorate from a regionally accredited institution
•A demonstrated record of continuous professional development in the areas related to online teaching, course quality assurance, and instructional technology
•Experience with Quality Matters
•Customer support in an educational institution

Salary Schedule

Salary Band: A120. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Located in historic Athens, Alabama, Athens State University offers junior and senior-level coursework to community college graduates and transfer students holding sufficient credits from other institutions. Presently, over 3,100 students have selected Athens State because of its neighborly environment where 50 majors and degree programs are offered, with courses taught by a supportive and exceptional faculty. Approximately 80% of the students are enrolled in at least one online course. The typical student is a working adult who commutes. Recently, the University was featured in the 2015 Best Value Online College Rankings by OnlineU.org for four online programs including computer science, accounting, education and human resources. The University offers undergraduate degree programs in Liberal Arts, Teacher Preparation, and Business.
