Job Details

DepartmentWith dual reporting to the Director, Facilities & Infrastructure Planning (DFIP), Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE) and the Director, Research Compliance and Safety (DRSC), Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), the FASE Health and Safety Advisor (HSA) is responsible for achieving and maintaining health and safety compliance within the Faculty. The HSA is responsible for ensuring that FASE meets its statutory and regulatory obligations under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Workplace Safety Insurance Act.  The HSA is responsible for providing strategic advice and program development, conducting workplace assessments, investigating health and safety hazards and accidents, developing training programs, preparing reports, acting as a liaison and resource person for joint health and safety committees and interprets health and safety legislation for unionized and non-unionized staff, faculty and students.

 

The incumbent will work with relevant stakeholders to identify and coordinate the implementation of corrective actions, if needed, to ensure the highest level of health and safety practices across FASE and to enhance the culture of health and safety among our students, faculty and staff. Working closely with the Vice Dean Undergraduate and Vice Dean Research and with those individuals in the Faculty’s Departments, Institutes, Divisions and Centres having specific health & safety responsibilities, the HSA will provide workplace assessments of teaching and research laboratories, will ensure that FASE teaching and research laboratories comply with the relevant health and safety standards, and will develop and implement occupational hygiene, health and safety programs and procedures, including training and presentations to graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and staff. The HSA also represents the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at Ministry of Labour (MOL), Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) meetings, grievance and arbitration meetings, investigations and inspections.



CampusI.     EDUCATION:

Master’s Degree in Engineering or Occupational Industrial Hygiene or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must have obtained or have the qualifications to obtain and maintain professional certification related to health and safety discipline such as occupational industrial hygiene (ROH or CIH or ROH), biosafety (CBSP, RBP), general safety (CRSP, CSP, CSP), or Risk Management (CRM). Licensure (or the ability to achieve it within two years) as a Professional Engineer in Ontario will be an asset. 

 

II.   EXPERIENCE: 

Five (5) years of recent and related experience required.  Demonstrated experience in conducting health and safety workplace inspections and assessments in research environments, including laboratories and non-laboratories and recommend revisions to health and safety standards and programs.  Experience providing strategic planning, advice and information relating to Ontario Health and Safety legislation to management. Experience working in a unionized environment and responding to union members concerns relating to Health and Safety issues. Thorough knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations under the Act; experience working in a large University environment; experience in identifying and implementing training needs in response to health and safety issues or problems or compliance issues, preparing presentations and training in an adult learning environment and knowledge of University policies and procedures and other related academic institutions.   Experience writing health and safety procedures and guidelines based on knowledge of relevant EHS legislation.  Demonstrated experience working with large Joint Health & Safety committees to provide advice, assistance and interpretation of standards, guidelines and legislation and taking the lead in ensuring health and safety compliance across an Academic environment.

 

III.  SKILLS: 

Ability to use monitoring and sampling equipment and knowledge of engineering and scientific laboratory equipment.  Must have demonstrated project management skills and preparing reports, including inspection reports, proposals, etc.  Good working knowledge of Power Point, Excel, Word, databases and updating websites.

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to influence others through collegial relationships.  Excellent oral and written communication skills; effective problem solving, and able to work independently and as part of a team.  Excellent organizational skills.  Tact, good judgment, diplomacy and initiative.  Detail oriented with attention to accuracy.  Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.  Ability to understand and document processes and procedures.
